Bio

I have degrees in linguistics (one from Gallaudet, so I know American Sign Language) and my PhD is in the learning processes in human development, and have taught in a variety of college and college-prep programs. As a constructivist educator with over 25 years' experience, I help both Deaf and hearing students discover and uncover what they need to know rather than simply making it a rote memorization experience. What’s great about tutoring is helping students learn to learn. This means connecting with the material they are studying to engage with the learning process itself so they can become increasingly better at planning and reflecting on their own cognitive strategies.

With most of my teaching career in literacy, I am deeply familiar with the processes of reading and writing. It is hugely helpful for students to learn that there are tools to use so that these processes produce outstanding results for comprehension and communication. The first task is deciding WHY something needs to be read or written, and recognizing there are different points of view that can be taken into account. With a bigger picture, learners are better able to get a handle on the language rules and standards that determine good reading and writing.

It is important to know that the task you are facing is not bigger than you – you can master it! With one-on-one work, a good tutor can help you identify the strengths you can leverage for the challenge at hand and turn that challenge into a personal success tool. I help you make reading and writing a part of who you are, so they become a matter of fitting yourself into them.
