Bio

I have a Ph.D. in Engineering from UC Berkeley and have been tutoring students since I was in graduate school. My approach to tutoring is based on first understanding the student's strengths and then building a bridge from those strengths to the area of study for tutoring. I draw upon my wide experiences to provide real-world examples that pertain the subject at hand to help the student make additional connections. My favorite part about tutoring is seeing the student have that "Ah Ha!" moment when it all clicks and becomes easier.

My grandpa was a math professor who taught using tangible examples to help explain the concepts in a concrete manner. He was my first math teacher and I have continued his legacy with my own kids and the students I tutor. Rather than drill on rote procedures, I take the time to explain the "why" behind each step of a problem and ensure that the student understands before moving on. Furthermore, my tutoring experience and engineering training help me to spot areas of systemic challenges and then zero in on those areas for additional attention.

I look forward to hearing from you and discussing with you your particular tutoring needs and setting up an initial meeting!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of those subjects that I love to teach! Many students start with the infamous questions, "Why do I have to learn this?" or "When will I need this in 'real' life?" I love seeing the look on students' faces when they understand algebra and can then learn how to apply it to *their* own lives, whether it be sports, music or just about any hobby.
Algebra 2, Geometry, Physics, SAT Math

Very helpful

I appreciate him taking time to explain the "Why" behind the problem. He took his time and figured out my learning style to better help me. I also like his availability and his willingness to meet me where it's convenient.

Great Tutor!!!

Robert works very well with my 8th grader. He associates math facts with thing my son is interested in to keep him engaged. He identifies what type of learner my son is to help him understand his work. The box that he introduced JaMarion to gave him a clear understanding of how to solve and manipulate the problems. Robert is helping JaMarion to build a math vocab dictionary to understand and identify word problems and what is needed solve the problem thoroughly and correctly. I would recommend Robert to any grade level. He shares stories with my son to help him gain hope and confidence in himself. We look forward to our next session. Thank you.

So Grateful!

Mr. J. is funny, personable and a content wizard! My son, who does not like teachers generally, finds it easy to learn from Mr. J's teaching style and techniques. Mr. J. has taken his own time to contact my son's high school math teacher to introduce himself and get course material in advance, so he's teaching my son content prior to walking into class. Class is then a review, and he can follow up with questions before a test. He's taken time to get to know my son's interests so he can make content relevant. We are so grateful!
