About Luke

My academic training is primarily in the humanities as I studied comparative religious studies and philosophy in my undergrad years. I also minored in classics (literature, language, culture of classical world), passably speak and can teach Spanish, and have some training in French and Latin.

I have held quite a few tutoring and teaching positions, both paid and unpaid, and ranging from 1st graders to college undergrads. My strongest and most recently active skill set concerns English composition, grammar, linguistics, vocabulary, and logical argument development. I worked 2.5 years with honors undergrads in these disciplines. Before that, I held a number of volunteer tutor positions with younger students, primarily working with math, language, and social sciences. I am qualified to work with elementary and high school math students, and some college level math.

I'm trained in formal logic as a philosophy major. (I was named the 'Outstanding Graduating Senior' from among my graduating class of 'philosophy' and 'philosophy, politics, & law' students). I've been learning Spanish since kindergarten, clocking me in at almost 15 years of study. Post high school I have 2 years. I can teach vocab, most grammar, speaking styles, etc.

My two majors (religious studies, philosophy) and my minor (classics) are heavily writing intensive, argument-driven fields of study so I was required to develop a positive relationship with the English language. Additionally, I was one of a few English tutors who worked for my university's honors writing center where it was my job to give guide students through the writing process, edit papers, brainstorm, work with logic, etc. I have studied religion, culture, and history comparatively for many years. I have helped to teach classes, conducted one on one and group tutoring sessions, written extensively, and given presentations regarding religious and cultural concepts.

My background, though primarily oriented towards academics, also features a lively participation in visual artwork. I have taken many art classes and am trained in drawing and painting. I’ve conducted a couple of large mural projects, have worked on art teams, and assisted in high school level art education. My current interests include pen and pencil portraiture, pointillism, and watercolors.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a B.A. in religious studies. I spent much time placing emphasis on the Christian tradition, working with scripture, practice, spirituality, and history through interdenominational lenses.

Classics

I have a minor in Classics from an accredited university. I studied Latin, extensively read Greek, Roman, Italian, Indian, and Chinese classical literature, and studied the respective cultural contexts.

Drawing

I have taken many classes in art creation, some in art history. I have been a teaching assistant in painting and drawing at the high school level. I have been hired professionally and as a volunteer to do mural projects as well as smaller, personal works of art.

Logic

I have a B.A. in philosophy and have taken courses specifically dealing with logic. All of my papers had to be logically valid and sound in order to be passable in my philosophy program. One of my specialties as a composition tutor for 2.5 years was the construction of logically reasonable arguments.

Philosophy

I have a B.A. in philosophy. I was named Outstanding Graduating Senior in the department. I specialize in theories of mind, philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and existentialism.

Religion

I have a B.A. in comparative cultural studies with an emphasis in the comparative study of religion. I have been a teaching assistant in an introductory religions of the world course. I have conducted independent studies in this field. I have won awards based on my academic merit (Lakeview Methodist Scholarship, Outstanding Graduating Senior).
