About Henry

My passion for teaching has kept me in the field for more than three decades and has taken me to several high schools and colleges in Asia, Africa and the United States. For the las ten years, I have worked with college students on English 101, and EFL students, who have benefited immensely from my knowledge, experience and ability to make my lessons both effective and interesting.

Knowing the challenges faced by language learners in many different parts of the world, I can change my teaching methodology and style to fit the needs of any student. In addition to improving students' ability to read and write, I can also train students to reach their highest potential in examinations such as TOEFL and SAT.

I have a BA majoring in English with history as a minor and a MA in the Teaching of English as a Foreign/Second Language. I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for Graduate Studies.

I am available for teaching individual or small groups of students in Gilbert, AZ and within twenty miles of Gilbert.
I can visit your homes or have classes in local libraries where available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL/ESOL at the high school and college levels in several countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and now in the US. Before relocating to AZ last week, I worked for ten years as an adjunct professor at SEMO in Cape Girardeau, and St. Louis Community College, both in Missouri State. I have a passion for teaching language, and am most gratified when I see the levels of success attained by my students as I deliver my lessons. I have received great reviews from my supervisors as well as my students.

Grammar

Grammar teaching has been an essential part of the ESL/ESOL teaching loads I have carried over the years. I have, over time, developed several grammar teaching techniques which go down very well with struggling ESL students, many of whom have actually commented on the lucidity and practicality of the methods I use. I dare say that I really enjoy teaching grammar, and know that they are very effective even for even the most challenged students.

IELTS

As a teacher of English at the high school and college levels, I have been preparing students for SAT and TOEFL, and have been designing, administering and grading tests for these tests.

TOEFL

In Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Nigeria I worked as principal of several international schools. Most of the graduating students from these schools enroll in colleges and universities in English speaking countries. While assisting them with the application process, I have conducted classes in TOEFL, and IELTS, helping them to achieve the required language competency for admission to schools in the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand. I have also been responsible for the running of TOEFL, GCE Oxford and Cambridge test centers in these countries.

Writing

For the last ten years I have been teaching ESL/ESOL writing to non-native English speakers at two colleges in Missouri. During my stint at SEMO in Cape Girardeau, I also taught ENG 101 (Composition). I am able to teach beginning level courses to the most advanced. During my last seven years at St. Louis Community College, I taught Advanced reading and writing to non-native speakers. My classes were always full, and my dropout rate was virtually zero. I pride myself on this achievement, especially considering the fact that it is a community college, where the students come from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, different age levels, and other demographics.
