San Diego State University (Geography)
I have attended college to become a teacher. I completed one and a half years of college studying ESL focused courses.
I enjoy teaching young and adult students in either a one on one scenario or in group settings. I have four children, all of which are bi-lingual and some becoming tri-lingual. Although my entire career has predominantly in the architectural and engineering fields, I have taught various subjects throughout the years, mostly as a volunteer. I've taught natural science, karate, and English.
Most recently, I operated my own English teaching school in Pouso Alegre, Brazil. I had 46 students of various ages. It was a joy and I made many friends for life through the two and a half years of living in Brazil. I am a natural at teaching. I do not rush students, I go with their flow. I do increase the flow of teaching and learning gradually as the student becomes more comfortable with their abilities.
I love language and I understand how a student strives to master a new language. I have studied three foreign languages including Spanish, German, and Portuguese. I am sensitive to the needs of each student and I realize that everyone has a different level of comprehension. I am patient and sensitive to the needs of each student.
My love of teaching and my background in geography and languages makes me an interesting teacher who doesn't bore students with straight and narrow rules or guidelines. I make each lesson personal and unique, but more importantly, fun. It can be compared to a ride at an amusement park. You will always want to go back for another ride. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
