Hi,

My name is Tsihugwa, which can be a tongue twister so friends call me Zee and students call me Mr. Zee. I have been a teacher/tutor for almost 28 years having first taught musical instruments in 1984. I graduated with Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1986 and a Master of Arts in Communication in 2001. I have taught high school, community college, and am currently on the online faculty at the University of Phoenix. In December 2010, I published my first novel entitled Son of the Oracle.

I believe my greatest teaching skill is the ability to discern where students are in relation to subject matter and identify problem areas. I am then able to work with them to bring them up to where they are supposed to be. Generally, I do not tell the students what to do. I challenge the students to realize what they are doing if it is different from what they should be doing. I then give them pointers and guidance on what they should be doing, and help put them on the right track. In this they are actively involved in learning and problem solving process, and they, therefore, learn more effectively.

I am easygoing, yet firm because I believe the primary objective of the student coming to me is to learn and this should be a painless yet fruitful, even fun venture!

Public Speaking

I have a Masters degree in communications with emphasis in television. I worked for five years with a television network on live shows and pre-taped productions. Before that I co-produced plays, musicals, and other dramatic events in Kenya. I am the author of two books. I am also the MD of an online radio station called where I also am a presenter on a weekly live show. All this has given a broad feel for Public Speaking in different environments and a good grasp of the basic principles for a student's particular needs.

Macintosh

I have been an Apple products user for over 20 years. I am therefore very familiar with the operating systems and the user interface. Apple tends to be very good at maintaining uniformity across devices and therefore familiarity with one is easily transferable to another. At present, I own a MacBook Pro, a G4 which I use for graphics and video editing, and an iPhone which I have noticed works as good as an iPad for many purposes. I am therefore comfortable with this platform and will be glad to help anyone new to it finding their footing.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Having been a student of course, and as a teacher, I understand the apprehension of students when it comes to Math. One thing I tell them is Math can be easy with the right approach, which means have a positive attitude towards it. Then with each topic, the student needs to grasp basic the concept. Next they need to know what the problem or question is asking. Finally, identify what information is given or available in order to solve. Those who have tried this formula have found Math to be fun. You can too!
Study Skills,

With study skills, I customize each lesson to the students individual needs in the specific subject. I first identify general areas of opportunity for the student in the subject. I then tailor each lesson to address the general need of the student. In particular, I identify attitude, approaches, strengths and weaknesses of the student. I then emphasize the positive qualities of the student and direct him or her to approach the subject in a way that identifies key steps required, therefore enhancing the learning process.

What is Algebra 1? To keep it simple, I would say what I do with the student in the subject. I help the student understand how to manipulate mathematical expressions in order to simplify them, solve an equation or graphically represent expressions. I try to make students identify the key concepts and apply them in performing the operations mentioned above.

Music

Trumpet

Trumpet

I studied music in Nairobi, Kenya, up to the 10th grade. The subjects included Music history, theory, composition, and practicals (meaning ability to play at least one orchestral instrument). My instrument was the trumpet. I started playing it in 1977 and in the same year, quickly progressed to join the Nairobi Orchestra of which I was a member for 21 years until 1998 when I moved to the U.S. Upon graduating college in 1986, though I primarily taught Math and Physics, I also taught brass and wind instruments at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music until 1991when I opted to teach music full time. Besides the orchestra, I played with The Nairobi City Players, a Theater group whenever they had musical productions. I played in such musicals as Jesus Christ Superstar, Barber of Seville, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, among others. These were all directed my renowned international directors and conductors. I also played with various Jazz, Rock, and Gospel groups in various clubs and hotels around town and in church. This is the broad experience I bring to each music student I have the privilege of teaching.

Prepared, knowledgeable and patient

Our first tutoring lesson with Patrice was great, this was my first experience with a tutor and didn't know what to expect or how to prepare. Patrice was well organized and prepared for any scenario. He was very patient and kind with my son who was very timid and apprehensive about tutoring.

Very Knowledgeable

Mr. Zee shows outstanding patience and he is greatly appreciated. My son is learning so much, he was once frustrated with learning, however Mr. Zee makes his tutoring time in a simple form, not in a complicated matter.
