About Steven

I study Math and Computer Science at Northern Arizona University. I'm one semester of college away from my degree and I'm very excited about getting to do some work with math students. My philosophy on tutoring is that every problem can be viewed in at least three different ways. Tutors can take a bit more time than teachers to really understand what the student needs to understand the material and do better in class.

I would love to work with you not just to improve your grades, but to really build up the kind of understanding that you can carry to future classes. Being stumped can be incredibly frustrating which is why tutors can make all the difference in tough subjects. Rest assured however that no one is truly just bad at math. We all understand things in different ways and I'm certain we can find a way you'll get it.

I have taken a Discrete Mathematics class at Northern Arizona University and received an A grade in the course. This class focused heavily on both Counting and Graph Theory and although Counting Theory is one of my favorite subjects to play with in my free time I use Graph Theory in almost every computer program I write.

What makes me a good tutor is I've taken the time to understand math beyond the classroom. If every problem can be done three different ways, I've taken the time to learn and understand all three ways.

Math is an amazing tool for the rest of your life. Beyond Algebra and Calculus, math teaches people how to think about situations abstractly. Having confidence in this area provides a very firm basis of confidence to fall back on in every other academic pursuit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

This is often a students first introduction to functions. The math involved here will be used in every math class after this one. It's worth investing the time to build a solid understanding of these topics and appreciate how to view questions in math.

Discrete Math

I have taken a Discrete Mathematics class at Northern Arizona University and received an A grade in the course. This class focused heavily on both Counting and Graph Theory and although Counting Theory is one of my favorite subjects to play with in my free time I use Graph Theory in almost every computer program I write. I still own two text books on the subject and practice from both in my spare time.

Guitar

I've been playing guitar for 15 years of my life. I've bought guitars for myself and helped friends decide which guitar is best for them. I was trained formally in school on Acoustic Folk but my passion is Blues on electric. I have a strong technical background but most of my progress is motivated by sheer love of this instrument.
