Northern Arizona University (Master's)
I graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2015 with a degree in English Secondary Education and previously taught 7th grade Language Arts at Heritage Middle School. I have spent the majority of my time in teaching positions that have allowed me to develop my management of groups, my ability to assess understanding, and knowledge of when success has been reached. Whether it was leading fellow Girl Scouts by example, representing the U.S. through the People to People organization in Australia and New Zealand, or competing with and supporting my fellow high school golf team members, I have relentlessly made it my goal to help others.
My personal feelings and beliefs about teaching stem from my time as a student and as a teacher. I believe that students learn best when I am aware of what they consider to be their weaknesses and strengths, and when they are able to pursue topics that interest them for projects. I also believe that when students have time to read in class, when they can review, edit, and revise their writing, and when they are challenged to write in different genres and formats they are able to consistently strengthen their writing skills. Lastly, if they are responsible for themselves and how they present themselves they are learning how to successfully cooperate and communicate. Most importantly, I believe students learn best if they know that they are in an environment free of ridicule and open to a little bit of goofiness.
For the 2015 to 2016 school year I was nominated for the Yavapai County First Teacher of the Year award. Being in my own classroom for the first time caused me to understand that my biggest strength is engaging students in all aspects of language arts. With only one year of certified teaching under my belt, I have decided to go back to college to obtain my master's degree in English literature so that I am better equipped to teach all genres of literature.
I am an enthusiastic teacher. I create lessons that involve movement and some silliness to get more than just your brain working. I'm extremely flexible to students needs and cannot wait to see what goals we can accomplish with some hard work. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
