About Dwayne

I have little experience as a tutor, but I do offer experience. I am actively involved in FIRST robotics as both a mentor and a coach. I help elementary aged kids learn basic concepts of engineering design through Lego robots and science research. I am excited to help in many fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) as these line up with my own interests. I am eager to learn new topics and new approaches as a life-long student myself.

I was raised with logic-based board games and an affinity for science, technology, and challenging puzzles. I approach chess games with friendly competition and I am not shy to offer feedback during a match. Through this I have learned to work with people at various levels requiring different teaching approaches. Many of my own students often will turn around teach me something new. By this experience, I will never assume I know more than any student, regardless of age, so I offer tutoring that comes with respect for the students' needs, not just textbook recital.

I am currently a Mechanical Engineering major on track to graduate on December 2016. I have been involved with engineering programs since my freshman year in high school and I have been been actively participating in competitions and mentoring programs since then. This includes FIRST robotics, a university robotics club, design projects for engineering classes, and calculus level STEM education.

I was raised in a bilingual household and I grew up by the Mexican border. My childhood community was filled with Spanish speakers and I would often translate for friends and family. I took "Spanish for Spanish Speakers" courses for 4 years before attending a University and scored a high mark (5/5) in the AP Spanish Exam.

I learned basic commands in Excel since as early as middle school, though I learned far more at home than I did at school. I have since then taken a project based course at NAU that explored lesser known features and commands that come with the software. I have also applied custom made spreadsheets to simplify several office procedures in a call center, complimenting my knowledge with real-world experience.

I was involved with a chess club before my high school years, and I played strategy based games at home. This ranged from games like Stratego and Othello to sillier games like RoboRally where you always needed to think 5 moves ahead. I value every piece in a chess match, as each plays an important role with various techniques. When it is welcome, I offer feedback during every match to offer a learning experience for anyone that will listen.

I consider myself flexible and patient for any student that is willing to learn. Please reach out if you have any questions about my experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have played chess both at home and at school since middle school. I have been taught several techniques through chess club and online communities. I make use of all pieces, including strong defensive plays that rely on pawns. I have played games against various skill levels and I offer advice during a match if it is desired.

Elementary Math

I am an engineering student that appreciates math and its applications. I also work with 5th graders in local robotics competitions, which includes math.

Mechanical Engineering

I am a Mechanical Engineering student at Northern Arizona University and I am scheduled to graduate on December 2016. I am currently involved in a Capstone project of designing STEM education tools that can be produced in Tanzania to help generate interest in academics and reduce drop-out rates.

Microsoft Excel

I learned excel at home and through a college course that explored business applications for Microsoft Office programs.
