About Katie

Dear parents and students,

My journey in education started as a Young Life volunteer while working on my B.A. at Hillsdale College (2000-2001). Later, (after graduation) I became a tutor at Scottsdale Community College. This was a stepping stone for me. It gave me my first experience tutoring one-on-one. In this setting I worked with adults who were going back to school after various careers. While this was rewarding, I really longed to be in a classroom setting working with younger people...

For as long as I can remember I have loved to write, inspire, and explain concepts. Further, I really enjoy working with children and young adults. Because I found such great joy working with youngsters, I went back to school in 2003 to get my education credentials. I have been teaching and tutoring for over ten years, and I still find great fulfillment in my career! I hope I get the opportunity to meet with you and help you achieve your academic goals.

The year following my high school graduation, I traveled to Guatemala. There, I spent three and a half months studying Spanish, living with a Guatemalan family, and finally, working at an orphanage. I tested out of three semesters of college Spanish, and I love speaking this language!

I studied religion, philosophy, and English literature during my time at Hillsdale College. Further, I am Arizona state certified in Secondary English. When teaching 10th Grade English at Betty H. Fairfax High School, I had a 100% pass rate on AIMS Reading. I break down concepts into small pieces for my students, and I strive to make learning both interesting and enjoyable.

During my experience at Phoenix Union High School District, created a IB curriculum that had to reflect the Common Core standards. I, therefore, became very well-versed with the CC.

While going back to school for my education credentials, I was a substitute teacher in a K-8th Grade district. The Balsz School District gave me first-hand experience with children of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

English teaching experience has given me tools to teach phonics.

Over the years, I have used many different types of technology. I am well-versed in this technology because of the various types of jobs I have had: working as a writer, documentary assistant producer, teacher, and musician. Currently, I teach Middle School Language Arts and Science in the Flagstaff Unified School District.

My undergraduate degree gave me a strong liberal arts foundation. I studied both American history, world history, religion, and art.

Last year I completed a yoga teacher training program at SWIHA in Tempe, Arizona.
Please contact me so our learning adventure can begin!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a degree in Christian Studies from Hillsdale College. I studied religion, philosophy, and social sciences.

Common Core

I created curriculum for an IB school (Betty H. Fairfax High School) using the Common Core standards.

Handwriting

I believe handwriting is very important. In today's society it is becoming a lost art. This is in major part due to technology. As an English teacher, I required all of my students to write their first drafts by hand. If I could not read their handwriting I would not even attempt to grade it.

I know how to teach the basics of handwriting, and I also require students to practice. Practice is the most important aspect of teaching handwriting. I find that if I require students to write in a daily journal, this helps their handwriting.

Macintosh

I have been using Macintosh computers for over ten years. Not only do I complete administrative tasks using my Macintosh, but I also record music and manage other art projects. Further, Macs are used a lot in education, and I have had a career in education for over ten years. Since I have recorded professional albums on Mac, written essays, and planned a wedding using my Mac, I feel very confident that I can help others with it.

Microsoft Publisher

While teaching, I started a school newspaper and used Microsoft Publisher to create it. It was a perfect fit because it gave me the ability to choose proper layouts, add pictures, and modify formats according to my needs.

Microsoft Windows

I taught high school English for nearly nine years using Microsoft Windows. I am very familiar with how MSW works because I was actually using it for at least three hours per day. In most of my career settings I use Microsoft Windows.
