First of all, thank you for your interest! I am an art historian, museum professional, and teacher/writer. Currently, I am also a PhD candidate in the visual arts. My interest lies with art, history, and cultural studies. I speak several foreign languages such as Dutch (my native tongue), German and French. My teaching experience includes several years of adjunct teaching at the college level in Holland and the United States. My teaching style is based on stimulating inquiry rather than lecturing. I believe that teaching is a journey that we can take together. It is my sincere hope that we will never stop asking questions. So, please don't hesitate and let me share the excitement I enjoy with teaching through this wonderful tutoring program. The first appointment is always free!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Masters degree in Art History from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. I worked as a museum curator for many years. I have 15 years of working experience as a museum curator. I also teach art history at the college level. Currently I am enrolled in a doctorate program in the visual arts.
Please allow me to share with you my experience with the Dutch language. First of all, I am a Dutch national. I was born and raised in Holland so Dutch is my native tongue. Although this does not necessarily qualify me to teach Dutch as a language, I believe it is an advantage especially with regard to pronunciation, syntax and vocabulary. Second, since my transition to the United States, I have become increasingly aware of the pitfalls when trying to communicate in a different language. Many words and expressions that we use in our language are culturally defined and cannot always be expressed in a different language. You can look up a word in a dictionary but problems arise when the dictionary gives you several different options! It then becomes a matter of familiarity with the culture and traditions of a different country. Being a Dutch national who has been living and working in the United States for several years now, I became enthusiastic about teaching in my own language because it gives me a better insight in my own language and cultural heritage.
