Student: Take it from someone who has seen it through, the time and energy you are spending now on your education IS going to matter in the direction of your life! A strong K-12 education prepares you for college, which in turn provides you with not only a degree which will help you get a better job, but also with an objective understanding of the world. This understanding will in turn affect every relationship in your life, from family and friends, to fellow workers, to your community, and there is no time like right now to get started on paving the way to a better future!
Parents: I can remember, as can most people, a few particular people who made a profound difference in my life, and at the top of that list are my parents and two teachers. When I think back about what it was that made these two teachers stand out it can best be summed up in two words: passion, and compassion. They had a passion for the subject they taught, as well as for teaching in general, and they had the compassion to relate to me one-on-one so that I could learn the specific things I needed at that time. They truly understood and believed in the importance of education and how it would affect the rest of my life.
Education: Three and a half years at Idaho State University in the field of psychology, with a minor in English. I am currently in the process of completing my BA and from there I will go on to a Master's program.
Experience: By home-schooling my younger daughter through high school (she is now in her third year at Boise State University and has a GPA of 3.97) I found that I love teaching and doing one-on-one tutoring. You will find that I not only have the ability to help you grasp difficult subjects and concepts, but that I will make it fun in the process. Nothing I can say here will be as convincing as your first session to see how together we can make you a more successful student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Chess is not only a fascinating and fun game, but learning to be a good chess player improves some thinking and planning skills for your life in general. A skilled chess player knows how to plan many moves ahead, and anticipates the possible moves of the opponent so that an alternate plan can be imposed. Most players tend to develop their own unique style, but a study of the classic styles and opening moves can help improve your own game. As your tutor I will help you to understand some of these classic styles and help you develop your own style based on your strengths and abilities.
It is most widely accepted that the game of chess was first invented in India, and later spread to Persia, Iran, Russia, and eventually to Western Europe where it developed into the form we know today. Some of the moves and rules were disputed and altered, but it is now widely unified into a common set of rules. The modern use of computers has brought the ability to play any skill level right to your screen, but the human aspect of the game will always be important. I look forward to sharing this wonderful and fascinating game with you.
