About David

I have always excelled in mathematics. I had good teachers in middle school and high school, and they laid a mathematics foundation that allowed me to score 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score was 800 when I took each test). I never lost points on geometry questions on either of those tests. Today I teach high school mathematics full-time in Phoenix. I love helping students during and outside of my full-time job.

On Saturday mornings during ACT and SAT season, I present seminars at Phoenix-area high schools to help prepare students for these tests. I have insight into the kinds of questions these tests frequently ask, the most-tested content, and time management strategies.

I have two graduate degrees in education. At Northwestern University, I minored in English, and then I completed a graduate degree in English education. I love to write, spending daily time writing for personal and professional purposes. I also enjoy reading for pleasure in my spare time. At Wright State University, I completed a graduate degree in special education and have helped students full-time, K-12, at every grade level. I work with students who have special needs, as well as students who just need a little extra help. I thrive in small group and one-on-one settings and love to provide individualized instruction.

I get excited about developing students into future leaders of our nation and the world. Earlier in my career, I spent five years teaching, coaching, and leading school improvement efforts at a multinational American school in northern Africa. I have spent time in over 40 countries and enjoy working with students from many cultural backgrounds.

I love helping my students and look forward to building and strengthening their abilities to succeed! Part of my hourly rate includes preparation time, as I review students' assignments, goals, or other materials, prior to meeting, so that I can maximize instructional time and money.

I also have a passion for helping students who may have difficulty affording a private tutor. It's worth sending me a message, letting me know your budget, even if it's below my posted rate. If I have availability, I will do my best to provide you with quality help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

On Saturday mornings during ACT and SAT season, I present seminars at Phoenix-area high schools to help prepare students for these tests. I have insight into the kinds of questions these tests frequently ask, the most-tested content, and time management strategies. I scored in the 99th percentile on the mathematics portions of standardized college entrance tests, including the ACT.

I teach high school mathematics as my full-time job. Part of my job is to help students with special needs to succeed in general education mathematics. I love helping students make sense of high school mathematics.

ACT Science

As part of ACT seminars that I present to high school students on Saturday mornings, I help students understand the keys to the ACT Science test. I provide test-taking skills and work through sample problems with students. Because the ACT Science test is a very fast test, it is important to have a game plan, heading into it!

ADHD

I am a licensed special education teacher in the State of Arizona. I teach mathematics in a high school setting, regularly working with students who have ADHD. I previously worked at a school that specialized in helping students with ADHD.

Algebra 1

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test at the time I took them). I currently teach high school mathematics. I spent several years teaching middle school students, as well. I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Algebra 2

I teach high school mathematics full-time and love helping students with math, even outside of my full-time job!

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test).

I have helped many high school students understand mathematics concepts. My special education experience, chiefly in middle school and high school settings, helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a graduate degree in special education. I spent a year working at a secondary school (7-12) that specialized in teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. While at that school, I spent several months providing home instruction to a high school student with Autism Spectrum Disorder, helping him in all core subject areas. I have worked with students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder from Kindergarten through high school.

Note: I have worked with many students who have described themselves as having “Asperger’s.” Around 2013, the American Psychiatric Association, in the DSM-5, discontinued using the term “Asperger’s,” a term that tended to describe high-functioning persons who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Labels and terminology aside, I regularly teach, learn from, and enjoy spending time with several high-functioning students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Bible Studies

I have read the Bible cover to cover multiple times and have studied the Bible for over thirty years. Using my knowledge of Bible stories, I can help students understand how the Bible intersects with literature, even if students do not adhere to a Christian belief system. I am also able to provide insight from a conservative Christian perspective.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold K-12 certification in special education. While most of my elementary students have tended to be toward the upper end of the elementary range, I have taught students in every grade level, K-12. I love working with a broad range of students!

Elementary Math

I have taught students at all ability levels, preschool through high school, in mathematics. I have mostly worked with elementary students in basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and word problems, although I have helped students with basic number sense (one-to-one correspondence, counting), as well.

I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics. I help a lot of students who need remedial help, or who have IEPs. When I work one-on-one with students, I try to find teaching styles that work well with what helps them learn material.

English

I am certified to teach English and Language Arts in Grades 7-12. I also am certified to teach special education, Grades K-12.

At Northwestern University, I minored in English, and then I completed a graduate degree in English education. I love to write, spending daily time writing for personal and professional purposes. I also enjoy reading for pleasure in my spare time. I can help with a wide range of English needs: basic help with reading; vocabulary; reading comprehension; writing; and literature.

Geometry

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test). I never lost points on Geometry on either of those tests, primarily because of an awesome Geometry teacher I had as a sophomore in high school. I have completed two graduate degrees today and still consider my high school Geometry teacher right at the top of the list of best teachers I ever had.

I have helped many high school students understand mathematics concepts. My special education experience, chiefly in middle school and high school settings, helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics. I teach high school mathematics, helping students on IEPs succeed in the general education classroom.

Literature

After completing two graduate degrees and teaching for several years in K-12 settings, I have noticed that most reading and literature assignments follow a predictable pattern: They ask students to read a few key passages of text closely, so that students can gain important insights. I can help students to do this effectively.

I am certified to teach English and Language Arts in Grades 7-12. I also am certified to teach special education, Grades K-12.

Prealgebra

I spent four years teaching middle school students, regularly helping them with Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 concepts. I currently teach high school mathematics. I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

PSAT

I have helped several students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. On Saturday mornings during SAT and ACT season, I present seminars at Phoenix-area high schools to help prepare students for these tests. I have insight into the kinds of questions these tests frequently ask, the most-tested content, and time management strategies. I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test). Getting good PSAT scores depends on using good test-taking strategies! I am especially good at helping students take complex test questions and make them into simpler questions, so that they can reason out answers, even if they forget content or are unfamiliar with it.

Reading

I love to read, and I love to help others enjoy reading! I have advanced degrees in special education and in English education. I love to help students read text closely to understand how it relates to them, and to the larger world.

SAT Math

On Saturday mornings during SAT and ACT season, I present seminars at Phoenix-area high schools to help prepare students for these tests. I have insight into the kinds of questions these tests frequently ask, the most-tested content, and time management strategies.
