About David

I get excited about developing students into future leaders of our nation and the world. Since 2014, I have taught middle school students in public schools in Phoenix. Earlier in my career, I spent five years teaching, coaching, and leading school improvement efforts at a multinational American school in northern Africa. I have spent time in over 40 countries and enjoy working with students from many cultural backgrounds.

During my days, I am a special education and reading/writing/mathematics intervention teacher. I work with students who have special needs, as well as students who just need a little extra help. I thrive in small group and one-on-one settings and love to provide individualized instruction.

I have always excelled in mathematics. I had good teachers in middle school and high school, and they laid a mathematics foundation that allowed me to score 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative; I never lost points on geometry questions on either of those tests. I help students almost daily with arithmetic and pre-algebra concepts.

At Northwestern University, I minored in English, and then I completed a graduate degree in English education. I love to write, spending daily time writing for personal and professional purposes. I also enjoy reading for pleasure in my spare time.

I love helping my students and look forward to building and strengthening their abilities to succeed! Part of my hourly rate includes preparation time, as I review students' assignments, goals, or other materials, prior to meeting, so that I can maximize instructional time and money.

I also have a passion for helping students who may have difficulty affording a private tutor. It's worth sending me a message, letting me know your budget, even if it's below my posted rate. If I have availability, I will do my best to provide you with quality help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored in the 99th percentile on the mathematics portions of standardized college entrance tests, including the ACT. I currently teach middle school students, regularly helping them with Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 concepts.

ADD/ADHD

I am licensed as a special education teacher in the State of Arizona. I currently teach in a middle school, where students in my classroom have ADD/ADHD. I have previously worked at a school that specialized in helping students with ADD/ADHD.

Algebra 1

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test). I currently teach middle school students, regularly helping them with Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 concepts. I have spent a significant amount of time helping eighth grade students and high school students. I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Algebra 2

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test). I have helped many high school students understand mathematics concepts. My special education experience, chiefly in middle school and high school settings, helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Aspergers

I have a graduate degree in special education. I spent a year working at a secondary school (7-12) that specialized in teaching students with autism, including students with Aspergers. For several months, I provided home instruction to a high school student with Aspergers, helping him in all core subject areas. I currently teach middle school students and regularly interact with students who have Aspergers.

Autism

I have a graduate degree in special education. I spent a year working at a secondary school (7-12) that specialized in teaching students with autism. For several months, I provided home instruction to a high school student with autism, helping him in all core subject areas. I currently teach middle school students and regularly interact with students who have autism.

Bible Studies

I have read the Bible cover to cover at least four times and have studied the Bible for over thirty years. I currently lead a men's Bible study. Using my knowledge of Bible stories, I can help students understand how the Bible intersects with literature, even if students do not adhere to a Christian belief system. I am also able to provide insight from a conservative Christian perspective.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold K-12 certification in special education. The 2016-2017 school year is my third in elementary school districts. Most of my students have tended to be toward the upper end of the elementary range, including several sixth grade students that I teach through my current assignment. Many of the skills I teach are elementary skills (basic reading, writing, and math). I love working with a broad range of students!

Elementary Math

I currently teach middle school students, although many of the concepts I teach are related to elementary concepts (basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, word problems).

I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics. I help a lot of students who need remedial help, or who have IEPs. When I work one-on-one with students, I try to find teaching styles that work well with what helps them learn material.

English

I can help with a wide range of English needs: basic help with reading; vocabulary; reading comprehension; writing; and literature.

During my days, I teach remedial reading to middle school students who need extra help, or who have IEPs with reading goals.

I am certified to teach English and Language Arts in Grades 7-12. I also am certified to teach special education, Grades K-12.

At Northwestern University, I minored in English, and then I completed a graduate degree in English education. I love to write, spending daily time writing for personal and professional purposes. I also enjoy reading for pleasure in my spare time.

Geometry

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test). I never lost points on Geometry on either of those tests, primarily because of an awesome Geometry teacher I had as a sophomore in high school. I have completed two graduate degrees today and still consider my high school Geometry teacher right at the top of the list of best teachers I ever had.

I have helped many high school students understand mathematics concepts. My special education experience, chiefly in middle school and high school settings, helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Literature

After completing two graduate degrees and teaching for several years in K-12 settings, I have noticed that most reading and literature assignments follow a predictable pattern: They ask students to read a few key passages of text closely, so that students can gain important insights. I can help students to do this effectively.

I am certified to teach English and Language Arts in Grades 7-12. I also am certified to teach special education, Grades K-12.

Prealgebra

I currently teach middle school students, regularly helping them with Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 concepts. I have spent a significant amount of time tutoring eighth grade students and high school students in these areas of mathematics. I have special education experience, which helps me to serve students at a wide range of ability levels in mathematics.

Reading

I love to read, and I love to help others enjoy reading! I have advanced degrees in special education and in English education. I love to help students read text closely to understand how it relates to them, and to the larger world.

SAT Math

I have always excelled in mathematics. I scored 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score of 800 for each test).

Getting good ACT/SAT scores depends on using good test-taking strategies! I am especially good at helping students take complex test questions and make them into simpler questions, so that they can reason out answers, even if they forget content or are unfamiliar with it.

I have spent a significant amount of time helping eighth grade students and high school students. I have an master's degree in education to teach students with special needs. I have taught students with various special needs, including: specific learning disabilities, autism, ADD/ADHD, and hearing impairment. I currently teach students with special needs in a middle school setting, primarily helping students to improve their reading and mathematics skills.

Fantastic Tutor

David is a fantastic tutor. We needed someone with expertise in special education for our student who is in the spectrum. He is patient, kind, compassionate, soft spoken, and has a great rapport working with teens. He has taken the time to review the IEP on his own time to offer suggestions that may have been overlooked by the staff at school. He has made a big difference, and our student has mad
