I am always looking for ways to share my love of science - be it volunteering at museums, performing demonstrations at science events, or simply exploring the answer to a friend's interesting question.
As corny as it sounds, my passion lies in rocks. They hold clues to the origin of our universe, not to mention valuable economic resources! Through keen observation and sound logic, we can piece together the history of an entire continent and hypothesize about its future.
I am an experienced field geologist and published researcher. My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in the physical sciences (Geology). I have presented original scientific research at conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. One of my papers received an award from the American Geophysical Union.
I can tutor in specific subjects within earth science, or general topics such as English, math, and reading, for elementary and college students. I am especially interested in helping you to improve your scientific and technical writing skills.
Drawing and painting are my favorite ways to relax. My pieces have been featured in art exhibitions. I have sold several paintings and even had a painting commissioned once! The subjects of my paintings are usually volcanoes, and my drawings are usually portraits.

My first lesson with Hilary went great. She's a very passionate about geology and overall a kind and patient person. All good things to say!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have earned a BS in Geology, as well as two Master's degrees (one American, one French). My specialization is volcanology, and I have extensive experience performing field work in remote and hazardous locations including active volcanoes in Hawaii, Guatemala, Iceland, Italy, and Kamchatka. I have been a teaching assistant for college-level geology courses and participate science outreach events whenever the opportunity arises.
I have an undergraduate certificate in GIS, and have certifications specific to the ArcGIS software suite directly from the developer. I use GIS professionally on a daily basis for creating maps/figures, performing spatial analyses, and manipulating large datasets.
I use Microsoft Excel on a daily basis for a variety of purposes including personal budgeting, data processing/analysis for professional research projects, and creating charts/graphs/visualizations. Part of my high school curriculum required becoming a certified Expert level user of the Microsoft Office suite.
