Arizona State University (history)
I was a National Merit Scholar in high school and graduated from ASU and the Barrett Honors College in 2000. That same year I started teaching SAT and GRE after scoring 800 A 760 M 740 V on the old GRE scoring scale and 780 M 760 V SAT. I have taught SAT classes and tutored for various standardized exams down to the 6th grade level and know the difference in scores that the added attention and coaching of my private tutoring makes for students.
I tutor all sections of the SAT and ACT and have helped students preparing to enter private high schools and boarding schools with the SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT exams. I find that tutoring works best when a student combines content review with test specific strategies whether that means reviewing the rules for a 30 60 90 triangle or improving answer choice elimination ability. Targeted mastery practice between sessions helps cement the concepts for students and make their responses on test day more automatic. For this reason I assign homework between sessions that is not designed to be rote churning through practice tests but is customized to the student's particular place in the learning process providing a more thoughtful experience and better score increases. I know how important mental attitude is for students on these exams and make sure to show my students their "wins" as their skills begin to grow. They will take that increased confidence into test day with them. I believe in creating a positive tutoring environment while still being upfront on homework expectations and goal progress with my students to help them take ownership of their studies. I understand that one way doesn't work for every student and am practiced at finding the right way to make material click. This may mean switch topics in a lesson frequently to keep an ADD student engaged or bringing a Kleenex box or an orange to help a hands-on student grasp rectangular solids and sphere questions. I love to see my students' successes and am always happy to find out later when they are accepted to their top choice colleges.
I look forward to helping your family reach your best scores! I was a National Merit Scholar in high school and graduated from ASU and the Barrett Honors College in 2000. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a top percentile scorer on my own college entrance exams and began preparing students to pass their tests in 2000. I know the content and strategies for this test section as well as what areas that are the most unfamiliar to students depending on their grade or level. From basic arithmetic rules to ACT trig I can blend content and testing strategies into effective lessons.

I have been working with middle and high school students for over a decade and know how to improve the academic content skills that the HSPT stresses. I can work with students who find standardized exams confusing or stressful. Since the HSPT is typically only taken once, I make sure my students are confident and ready before test day.
I scored in the 99th percentile on my own SAT exams and began preparing students to pass their tests in 2000. I know all of the math from basic arithmetic to Algebra 2 that students will encounter on test day. My lessons will blend that with test specific strategies to improve scores. I scored in the 99th percentile on my own SAT exams and began preparing students to pass their tests in 2000. I know all of the Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension question types that can occur on this section. Beyond simple vocab acquisition, I can help students learn to eliminate answers by word charge or word roots. I also will work with students on Active Reading time management as well as passage question triage.
I was a top percentile scorer on my own college entrance exams and began preparing students to pass their tests in 2000. I know the content and strategies for both the multiple choice grammar and essay. I am familiar with what grammar topics are most often unknown to students to help them focus quickly on their easiest "get-able points."
