My top priority is to give you a conceptual understanding of the material (as opposed to rote memorization). I do this by asking you questions to gauge your understanding. Then I assign tailored problems (often which I make up on the spot) to address the material you don't understand. I also like to encourage you by pointing out the things you do understand. I am very patient since, unlike most math people, I understand that this stuff isn't obvious just because I know it! I joke around to keep you entertained while still being intellectually demanding.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have a master's degree in physics and am currently working on a book detailing a philosophy of mathematics education.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 often has students memorizing and regurgitating concepts they are not really taught to understand. My approach reduces Algebra 2 down to concepts the student already understands from Algebra 1, allowing them to gain a genuine understanding of the ideas. I have been using this method to great effect for many years. Many students who used to hate math now love it because it now makes sense to them.
Calculus,

Calculus

Students will gain a genuine understanding of the meaning of these concepts without just memorizing formulas. This forms a solid foundation for critical thinking for college and/or skills that are required for STEM study in college.
Geometry,

Geometry

My approach focuses on understanding concepts. Teachers in this subject tend to have the students memorize and regurgitate theorems without understanding what they mean or even why they matter. My approach focuses on both. Many students over the years have told me that they hated geometry until I showed them how it was actually useful and logical.
Physics,

Physics

Most students find this class difficult because they have been taught to memorize equations when physics requires intimate understanding of how to apply math. My approach focuses on understanding the concepts, then learning how to apply the math from there. I have a masters degree in this subject and have been teaching it for over a decade.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus often has students memorizing and regurgitating concepts they are not really taught to understand. My approach reduces precalculus down to concepts the student already understands from algebra, allowing them to gain a genuine understanding of the ideas. I have been using this method to great effect for many years.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have been using differential equations for the last 4 years of my Physics classes, and for 2 years in my research. Differential Equations forms the foundation of Quantum Mechanics, which is my primary area of study.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have 6 years of experience tutoring college level math, including teaching discrete mathematics. To complete my degree, I needed all the skills one learns in discrete mathematics and I have experience tutoring students in this subject. Let me know your specific subject needs for more information.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

My specialty in Physics is Quantum Mechanics, which uses linear vector spaces, an advanced concept in Linear Algebra. Not only did I take a class in the basics of Linear Algebra as an undergrad, but I have been using the advanced concepts of linear vector spaces for the last three years in my Quantum Mechanics courses and research.

Amazing tutor

Enthusiastic, patient, knowledgeable. Always makes sure you understand what you are learning. When teaching physics, he makes sure you know the concept, not just the math.

Angela, 11 lessons with James

First lesson went great!

Worked with my daughter on her college level Physics homework and gave her a much better understanding of the material. She plans to continue getting help from James. Glad to find someone with extensive knowledge in Physics!

Suzie, 1 lesson with James

Excellent Tutor

James is a highly competent tutor who knows the material very well and is equally good at assessing the student's capabilities and knowledge. James will not move forward until he is sure you understand the concept. Excellent tutor!

Aaron, 3 lessons with James

Knowledgeable and helpful

He made things clear and gave me new strategies for figuring out problems. He has positive energy and didn’t waste a moment. Very effective. Also he was timely.

Perfect tutor for my 16 year old son!

Took the time to explain and gave good advice what my son needs to work on. James explained and showed my son how to figure out problems. We met with him the day before my son had to take a test and James made it a lot easier to take, giving tips and strategies. My son can't wait to meet with James again!

Rachael, 3 lessons with James

Very good tutor

James was very knowledgeable, patient and kind. He helped me with Geometry. He communicates clearly and makes difficult concepts understandable. It was easy to work with him. Thanks.

Grace, 1 lesson with James

Physics

James approach to teaching Physics is more relatable than my daughter's actual teacher. She felt lost before their session and now she has a more positive outlook for the course.

Karen, 2 lessons with James

Extremely knowledgeable

James has done an excellent job with my son with his 9th grade Honors Geometry class. With only one session he was able to bring my son’s grade up for a test. We have used him many times since and his grade has progressively improved. He is really patient and easy to understand.

Lori, 6 lessons with James

Explains “why” not just “how”

James explains the why behind concepts he teaches not just how. This helps me understand and retain the information. He is also friendly and keeps things fun. *****
