Greetings to English Language Learners and their families!
In July, 2012, my family and I moved from Rochester, NY to Phoenix, AZ. Since then, I have been a private tutor through Wyzant, and I taught English as a second language for one year at Arizona State University in their intensive English language program, Global Launch (formerly known as the American English Cultural Program - AECP).
Until June, 2012, I was a full time, tenured ESOL teacher at a High School in the Greece Central School District in Rochester, NY. My students came from many different countries and spoke many different languages. Some had a solid education from their native countries, and other students came to us with very little or no education at all. Also, some students came to us already knowing some English, while others knew no English.
During the 5 years I taught at the high school, I had separate ESL classes where students came directly to my classroom to build their English skills. Also, I often went into subject classrooms to help students learn English while they studied their subjects. The subject classrooms I went to were Global History, U.S. History, English for grades 10-12, algebra, health, and career classes. Those are all subjects I know and can help with, too. Additionally, I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish, so I've tutored students in that subject as well.
My teaching methods depend on the needs of a student. During the first session, I will learn exactly what my students (and their parents) want, and what they need. I will determine their strengths and weaknesses, and design lessons accordingly. I believe strongly in developing all 4 language skills equally (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). After each session, I will give my student(s) a specific skill to work on until the next session.
My goal is to teach my students to NOT NEED ME anymore! One of the most important aspects of tutoring is to provide strategies so that students can become independent learners. I have solid experience with all age and proficiency levels.
As a person, I am very relaxed and friendly. Although I am easygoing, I expect 100% effort from my students while we are working together. English is learned best when the learner is relaxed and not nervous, so I feel very strongly about having a relaxed atmosphere. It is not difficult to work hard AND have fun!
I look forward to meeting all of you!

Mrs Ann is the best teacher I have ever met, she is nice and patient, she teaches me from fundamental knowledge to strategies for exam, she is an experienced ESL teacher, never feel nervous to talk with her, every class is fun and useful. She is a great teacher who never works for money but for students, this is the most touching thing. I really wanna say thanks, cause she helps me a lot!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
