Struggling through an intensive chemistry course my freshman year of high school, I had no idea where to turn for help. I began to fail when I could not grasp the concept of the quantum theory or chemical bonding. Eventually, I reached out to a tutor through a company similar to Wyzant. My tutor helped me through my course and acted as a second teacher. I aspire to help students realize their true potential, build confidence and see their growth as their scores improve.
I specialize in tutoring all sub-fields of English at the college, high school and middle school level. These areas include, but are not limited to: proofreading, literature comprehension, phonetics, writing, vocabulary, SAT prep, etc. Additionally, I can provide tutoring in psychology as my undergraduate work was in the field.
My goal for each session is to treat the student as an equal while keeping them challenged and playing to their strengths. I provide periodic assessments and am always available for feedback.
My availability to work with you is open from 9am to 9pm during the week. I can travel to meet students or meet online. Weekend hours vary, I am always willing to work with you.
I am currently in a masters of secondary education and on the path to become and English teacher for middle and high school levels. The state considers me highly qualified through a passing score on the English National Evaluation Series (NES) exam. Additionally I have studied English at the undergraduate level. Courses taken include Caribbean Literature, Great American Authors, and Women, Writers and the Gods. Additionally I worked at my college newspaper for three years and learned copy editing and journalistic writing skills.
I look forward to meeting with you and constructing an educational plan best fit to meet your needs! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While working in the AVID program for TUSD we focused on teaching the student study skills and organizational skills that would help them succeed at higher education levels. Helpful study skills include learning to annotate, learning note taking (such as Cornell notes), utilizing flash cards and looking into outside resources. Additionally, as a tutor I have worked with students to create study schedules varying between their different subjects.
