About Michael

Hello! My name is Michael and I'm currently a school administrator. I taught middle school math for seven years before receiving my Master's degree from Northern Arizona University in School Administration. While I enjoy the administrative aspects of education, I do miss teaching and feel that tutoring would be a great fit for me with my background in math and my desire to teach others.

I do have previous experience as a tutor. I worked independently for three years, tutoring mostly middle schoolers and high schoolers in math. I also worked for two tutoring companies, however, I felt that they often ripped off parents and students and didn't give them much return for their investments. I have an extensive background in mathematics and teaching and can differentiate to my instruction/tutoring to find the best way for you to learn. My goal is to challenge each student, while not making them feel overwhelmed. From my experiences, math is often perceived as much more difficult than it actually is. I try to simplify it and enjoy getting that "ah ha" moment from my students when they catch on to the concept(s).

I've always enjoyed math and enjoyed teaching it, as well. My enthusiasm for math and for learning is evident in my teaching. I also believe that like almost anything, to really learn something, you have to somewhat enjoy doing it. That is why I like to mix humor into my teaching, while still maintaining focus on a clear objective of what the you will be learning that lesson.

Thank you for taking time to read my profile. If you are needing help in middle school or high school level math, I encourage you to contact me to learn more about what I can offer you and assist you with.

Sincerely,

Mike

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I've taught middle school math for 7 years with several of those years being during the systematic change towards Common Core. For professional development, I've attended several workshops on how to teach Common Core and teach students to learn "deeper". I understand that it is imperative to teach students to understand the "how" and the "why" instead of simply providing shortcuts to answer questions.
