About Sybil

I am interested in teaching writing, literature and/or drawing

I love the English language. I find magic in the written word and don't want writing to become a lost art.

I was a working artist for over 25 years, exhibiting my work at Universities and other venues throughout the western United States.

I have been a published author for over 15 years. My work has been published in numerous magazines, I currently having a children's book on the market. At this time I am working with an agent and editor on a major book about the animal sanctuary I run.

For the past few years, my stories and essays have been published in Southern Arizona newspapers under the heading "The Animals We Live With."

I began drawing as well as writing poetry and prose at a very early age. I encourage kids to write about the areas they are most interested in, to write as though they were simply speaking to a friend or family member. I also stress the importance of reading in order to become familiar with the written word.

Drawing is the basis for all visual art. I have worked in and can teach various media (charcoal, pencil, pen and ink etc.) and encourage working from life as well as from imagination.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been a working artist since graduating from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1973. I have shown extensively in the western US.

I am a figurative artist with extensive expertise in all manner of life-drawing.

The drawing media I am adept in include pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, pastel. I work on various papers as well as drawing on canvas and board. I also show students how to work from photographs, slides, projected images.

I have been a published writer for more than 20 years. I currently have a small business that, among other things, helps people create the written word and communicate exactly what they want to impart in a cohesive manner. I have done a lot of editing for academia as well as the general public.

I have been a fine art painter since 1973 when I graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute. I have shown extensively throughout the western United States and have my work archived in both California and at the Smithsonian in Washington DC (with the California Surrealists of the 1970-80's.) I am primarily a figurative oil painter but have worked with enamel paints, acrylics, gouache. I am also adept at multiple drawing techniques, a prerequisite for painting. I am able to teach color theory, perspective, anatomy, life drawing. I have worked extensively with the chemistry of paint and with building canvases and other painting surfaces which will withstand the tests of time.

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker since the late 1970s, speaking on topics ranging from the art, to starting a non-profit venture, to animal welfare. I have given talks at Universities, various clubs and organizations as well as Conferences across the country, where I have been an "invited speaker."

A limited list of my speaking engagements:
Oakland College of Arts and Crafts
Arizona State University
University of California, Chico (Chico Cal.)
Association of Avian Veterinarians
Sally Blanchard's "Pet Bird Conference" (Oakland Calif.)
Parrot Education and Adoption Center (both in San Diego and Cleveland)
Houston Bird Club (Houston Texas)
Albuquerque Bird Club (Albuquerque Nedw Mexico)
Long Island Parrot Society "LIPS" (Long Island New York)

Reading is the key to learning. It opens the door to writing and the exploration of any subject of interest.

As I writer I read constantly. I believe that in order to enable reading comprehension, the subject must be of interest to the young person. Often instead of asking the student to write a report about what they learned I encourage them to use other forms of creative expression: art or poetry or any other form which will enable the student to express what they have read and learned.

The most important part of education is learning how to research and grow. Reading is primary to this endeavor.

I have been a published writer for over 15 years. I have written short stories for magazines, and have written columns for local newspapers and specialty publications.
In business I have written everything from formal reports to business letters, articles for newsletters and publicity.
I enjoy enabling students to learn how to express themselves through the written word.
