I've taught English for 7 years, and General Science for 1 year. I've built and refurbished PC desk- and Laptop computers since 1986, and owned my own auto repair shop business from 1985 to 1997. I have managed a retail electronics store, and I have supervised an inbound sales department in a major Call Center.
My wife is a highly skilled Special Ed teacher and we have raised several special needs children of our own. A few years back, we took on an 18-year-old autistic high school sophomore who was failing in the public schools and taught him from August to May, and he graduated at the end of that year. I have gained much knowledge and experience working with people with learning disabilities and with Traumatic Brain Injury survivors, among whom my wife and I count ourselves since a 2004 auto accident.
I believe in teaching and assessing competency. To me, volume of work is not as important as how correctly it is done and with how much quality. If you are in school, I don't want to burden you with a lot of extra work. Instead, I would prefer to help you improve your schoolwork. If you are simply seeking to improve your knowledge or skills, we will work together to increase your competency in the areas you consider appropriate. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My Bachelor's Degree from Western Illinois University is a Bachelor of Science with dual majors in Law Enforcement / Justice Administration (LEJA) and English. This was the basic program for Pre-Law at WIU. My GPA was 3.875, with 3.925 in my core courses. I served my Internship with the Cochise County Attorney's office in Bisbee, AZ. Though I intended to go on to Law School, a severe auto accident left me unable to do so and I instead obtained teaching certificates and became a teacher of Language Arts. I believe I can assist a LEJA student with his or her studies.
