I am currently pursuing my PhD in Clinical Social Work with an emphasis in Crisis and Disaster Management. I am at the dissertation phase, which means that I am ABD (all but dissertation). My current research focuses on using service dogs for individuals who have emotional and mental health disabilities.
As far as my work history, I have worked in a variety of settings, including, middle and high schools, schools for individuals with physical and emotional disabilities, Universities, and psychiatric and regular hospitals. In all of those positions, I have needed to educate others on a variety of subjects, from health issues, to help with school work, to learning communication skills. I have taught introductory classes for homeschooling groups, including: ASL, basic math, reading, history, general science, religion and statistics.

As an educator, I use the students strengths in order to help them succeed in their classes. When working with students who have emotional disabilities, I utilize therapeutic techniques that will allow them to work through their current task, as well as, utilize the techniques in other areas of life.

I was born deaf and utilized ASL as my primary language until I was in my late teen years. When I was a child, I was enrolled in and attended a school for the deaf where the focus was on communicating through ASL. Since then, I have worked as an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing in various settings, from medical appointments, to legal settings to church. I taught 3 classes for ASL in the past, beginner, intermediate and advanced. In the beginner class, students were taught sentence structure, basic words and basic communication skills. In the intermediate class, students were introduced to more in depth communication through ASL and communicating with facial expressions. Participants in this class are encouraged to focus on using ASL to communicate instead of their voice. In the advanced class, participants were to only communicate through ASL. At this level, students would be invited to attend an all deaf/hoh event where their only means of communicating was through ASL.

Have worked in the mental health field for 12 years working with a variety of individuals ranging from children to older adults. Super helpful!

Heather was friendly and full of guidance for my ASWB clinical test including specific direction on what areas to study. She knew the newest direction the test is heading for this year which I found particularly helpful. Thank you!

A research methods expert in the field

I am struggling with getting the concepts of research methods. Heather makes learning fun and easy. After a session with Heather I was able to share what I learned and explain the concepts to the rest of my class members in everyday terms.

Great 1st session

Heather was on time, pleasant and easy to talk to. I enjoyed the session and believe Heather is able to help me get this. Looking forward to the next session.

Very helpful and adaptive

Heather identified what I needed to learn at my current stage of learning and provided the right kind of teaching and feedback so that I can learn the information quickly. She is focused yet flexible and sociable. I encourage anyone looking to learn ASL to use her tutelage about the language and current cultural aspects of ASL communication to make strong movements in their learning.

Very thorough tutor

Heather taught me things that my professor did not teach. She was able to help me outline the basic info I need and she was very helpful in answering all of my questions.

Melissa, 1 lesson with Heather

Heather was very knowledgeable

Heather was able to help me understand how to look for key words in my quizzes. Heather helped me to understand that I need to get out of my head and look at it from a concrete perspective. Once I did that it made more sense to me as I reviewed the other quiz questions I had trouble with answering.
