University of Colorado, Boulder (B.A. Linguistics)
I received a BA in Linguistics from the University of Colorado. I have over fifteen years experience teaching in a classroom setting, and more than two years tutoring individuals and groups. I've taught Kindergarten (phonics and reading), Middle and High School English (reading, comprehension, writing help), and Spanish I and II. I've taught Spanish to all ages, Kindergarten to adult. I especially love to make learning enjoyable and use hands on activities and role-playing whenever possible. I can also help those who are wanting or needing to learn English, for pleasure or for their employment. I would love to help you with your needs.
I can personalize my tutoring to meet your needs, whether it be providing assistance with a course the student is taking or providing original lessons for a particular need. We were so glad to find Nancy. She is energetic. She is knowledgeable about our online course. She is dedicated to helping people learn and has a plan on how to be helpful. Her passion for teaching shines.
I'm glad to have Nancy as a Spanish tutor for my two kids. They start to understand more and they start to speak Spanish more confidently.
My daughter said she is "so happy" she has the opportunity to work with Nancy. Even before the actual first session and directly after the meet and greet, my daughter was excited about working with Nancy, and was intrigued by her background, and pathway to becoming a Spanish tutor.
Nancy went out of her way to accommodate my daughters class curriculum (MDLP) Spanish II; which is not a walk in the park especially in the online environment; setting up an electronic environment at the library study room making the lessons seamless for her and my daughter. This helped with the pace at which they could work and thus far has resulted in a positive upward trend in my daughters grade.
We appreciate Nancy!
Nancy knew how to adapt to my specific English learning needs. Her classes were very carefully planed, well organized and very interesting.
Since she is also very fluent in spanish and knowledgeable of the spanish culture, this helped me in my learning. Although I am Spanish speaking, I am sure she is perfectly qualified to teach students from any nationality.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
First, I studied Linguistics, and English grammar while attending the University of Colorado.
Second, I taught 7th, 8th and 9th grade English. The classes included grammar, word usage, vocabulary, writing and literature.
I have previous tutoring experience working with foreign students trying to improve their English. I was involved with a group that teaches English to people from a wide variety of countries. We worked either one-on-one or in small groups of two or three. Recently I worked with a woman from Spain and currently am tutoring a woman from China. I strive to find a balance between grammar and conversation. I also use many of my teaching techniques that I used in my 14 years of teaching Spanish, including hands on activities and role-playing.
First, my degree in Linguistics included many classes in phonics and structure of Languages. Second, I taught Kindergarten and Preschool children for five years. Teaching them to read using phonics was an integral part of my curriculum. I just recently worked at a school as a Reading Interventionist. I used phonics again to help with sounding out words and also correct pronunciation.
I taught 7th, 8th and 9th grade English. Reading fluency was an integral part of the curriculum.
I worked at one school as a Reading Interventialist. I worked with a small group of 5th and 6th grade students who were struggling with their Reading. The curriculum included reading fluency, comphrehension, vocabulary building, and writing.
I began my study of Spanish while in 3rd grade. I studied Spanish every year through my Senior year of college.
I taught Spanish I and II in several different schools for 14 years. I matched my curriculum to the Colorado State Standards of Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Culture.
Besides the 14 years of classroom teaching experience, I've tutored students on a one to one basis many times.
I taught Kindergarten and Elementary Spanish for 5 years. I worked on the mechanics such as punctuation and capitilization, paragraph and longer essay writing.
I taught English to 7th, 8th and 9th graders. The curriculum included plenty of opportunities for wriiting: essays, prose, descriptive paragraphs, biographies, term papers.
