Greetings! I am a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, where I study the ways that contemporary media affect movements for social change. Greetings! I am a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, where I study the ways that contemporary media affect movements for social change. I have tutored elementary school, high school, and college students in the past, and I currently work as a Teaching Assistant. I love tutoring because every student's mind is different (including my own), and it is fascinating to see what students can do when they put their particular inclinations and abilities to a given task. I love the feeling one gets when, having learned something new, one's sense of the universe is ever so slightly expanded.
I graduated from Southern Methodist University with a dual B.A. in Anthropology and Film and Media Arts in 2013. Then I took a gap year between undergraduate and graduate school, during which I worked as the field coordinator and chief survey administrator for an SMU Economics Department survey project on food insecurity in North Texas. During my gap year, I continued working on my undergraduate thesis research, delivering conference talks at three professional meetings around the country. Then, in 2014, I began the PhD program at Penn.

I completed several graduate seminars in ethnographic (anthropological) methods/writing while still an undergraduate, and completed a two-year ethnographic study of humanitarian aid work on the U.S.-Mexico border. I read and study philosophy as part of my current program of graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania.

I received perfect scores on the ACT English, ACT Reading, SAT Writing, and GRE Verbal exams. Additionally, I have won several writing awards, including a Harriet Beecher Stowe Center Award for short essay writing on social justice issues, and SMU's Larrie and Bobbi Weil Undergraduate Research Award, for a paper on female playwrights of the Italian Renaissance. As part of my work as a PhD student, I write literature reviews, conference papers, and research papers in preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals. My work has been published on the scholarly blog Access Denied: A Conversation on Undocumented Im/migration and Health, and in the Council on Undergraduate Research Quarterly.

I would be happy to work with you to improve your writing or subject-specific performance in a low-stress, high-inspiration atmosphere. I love to teach because learning has changed my life. Reading, researching, and synthesizing my studies through writing continues to open up new worlds of discovery for me every day. I hope I can help you to think like a social scientist and write like a critical philosopher. Give me a call; I would love to hear from you.

Study Skills

I've closely tutored two students, one high school and one college, in strengthening their time management, reading, and memory skills in order to study more effectively (the high school student was for AP Biology; the college student was for Communication and Cultural Studies). I have also TA'd two classes in which I worked closely with undergrad students to break the course content into memorable and meaningful segments so that they could have success in exams and quizzes. I have reflected in depth over many years about the reasons for my success in reading, remembering, and test taking, and have developed personal strategies to maximize that success: namely, a proven technique of using memorable contrasts and comparisons to cluster and categorize information. I have taught multiple students how to apply that same procedure of contrasts and comparisons to interpret and remember long readings.

I have worked with students on their writing from first grade to college. I know how to teach the basics on the elementary level, the junior high level, and then how to craft more complex arguments in high school and into college. I write for a living and received perfect scores in ACT Reading and English, SAT Writing, and GRE Verbal.

Knowledgeable and thorough

Rachel helps my son on his college subject study. She is very knowledgeable and responsible tutor. Every time after the teaching, she will send a recap summarizing each aspects in detail during the tutor. She also has effective communication with the parents and keep us posted with the status of learning. Rachel is great teacher and both my son and myself satisfy with her diligent work and contributions. She deserves highest rate of recommendation for her knowledge and effort. thanks!
