My name is Kelley. I have been in education for 20 years, and have loved every minute of it!I come from a family of educators. My mother is a retired high school math teacher, my sister is a middle school science teacher, and both of my grandparents were educators. I have spent my last 6 years as a literacy specialist and have had the opportunity to work with every grade level as well as educate teachers on best practices for their classrooms. I also have a Masters degree in Educational Administration and am certified to teach English Language Learners. I am also in charge of the free after school tutoring program for students in grades 3-5 in my building, and have been for the past 3 years.
I am very familiar with the grade level standards in all elementary grades as well as the new Common Core Standards that most area school districts are moving towards. I am currently serving on a team to help write curriculum and lessons for the 4th grade Common Core units. Teaching in the classroom for many years allowed me to experience almost every type of standardized test that came along, so I can offer many testing tips for a variety of tests: SAT10, ITBS, Augmented Benchmark, MAP testing. I also help administer the tests at my current school, so I am very current on the latest testing needs. My strengths are in reading and writing, but I can definitely help with math for students in K-4.
My tutoring methods depend on each individual student. I don't believe that one method fits all students. I like to look at strengths and weaknesses and go from there. My belief is that every student can learn, but some just learn differently. It's an educator's job to find out how each child learns best and design lessons and activities to fit that learning style. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am currently certified in elementary education, teaching English Language Learners, and Educational Administration. I work with all grade levels in my building on a daily basis and deliver all the professional development to the teachers. I am current on the standards for all grades as well as the new Common Core State Standards that our state has implemented. I am in charge of the after school tutoring program in our school that students in grades 3-5 attend, and have taught summer school several summers over the years.
I have been a classroom teacher for 14 years and a literacy specialist for the last 6 years. I have helped many students learn how to become organized and learn how to know what types of techniques best help with studying. I am very familiar with the standards of all elementary grade levels and have worked with grades K-5. My current position as a literacy specialist allows me to train teachers on the latest strategies to best help their students, so I am always attending professional development and learning new things.
