University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (English)
I'm a college graduate with a B.A. in English--graduated in 1980--and have been an amateur (so far) writer with steady experience since then (that would be roughly 30 years)--some of it online, some of it in things like letters to editors, but most of it in amateur fiction publications known as "fanzines". I have expertise in pretty much anything English-related, therefore--grammar, spelling, composition, that type of thing.
I also have years and years of artistic experience (drawing, painting, use of various media, and various types of crafts); at one point, I was actually going to major in art before I changed it to English, so I would be able to tutor in that area, as well (again, have kept in practice with this since college--there are many examples of my art online, as well as my writing). I should mention that I have not actually done any tutoring yet, but a friend recommended it to me as a possible means of extra income, given my knowledge of English.
I can go to the student's home or have the sessions here--I think I will be able to set up a work-space for us in my office room--or we can meet in some neutral place of the student's choosing (library, etc.). Potential students should also be aware that the only language I'm fluent in is English, so if you're learning it as a second language, I need you to be able to communicate verbally in English at least well enough for me to understand you in order to be your tutor.
I am married to a Navy vet and we moved back to Arkansas (where we both grew up--we now live in Springdale) after he retired from the service in 1997; we have no children but have lived around cats for our entire marriage (and longer, actually). Aside from writing, I count among my hobbies a variety of arts and crafts, photography, walking, enjoying our beautiful scenery and, when I get the chance, swimming. I also enjoy older TV shows (70s and earlier, mainly) and movies (especially 50s and earlier). Favorite genres: science-fiction/fantasy, adventure, classic movies including musicals and pirate movies. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I love American history and have always enjoyed the study of Revolution era and WWII history in particular.
I have over 20 years of experience in drawing in pencil, ink, charcoal and most media. I was going to major in art before changing my major to English, so I have a lot of formal training myself. I have had my art published (alongside my writing) in amateur publications spanning the years since my graduation from college, and you can find examples scattered over the Internet, including my Facebook page.
General tutoring in all English-related subjects: reading, writing, grammar, etc.
Usage of the English Language, including both grammar and spelling.
I have experience with painting mainly in ink, tempera, water color and acrylic, including wearable art like hand-painted T-shirts. Have been painting and drawing all my life and came very close to majoring in art in college, after which I also started doing crafts. I consider myself a "semi-professional" artist--I've done some commission work and been in a show or two. Also have art photos on my Facebook page.
Proofreading or tutoring proofreading--help with editing papers or other written work.
Reading and writing were both my forte from elementary school through college. I was always testing at 1-2 levels ahead of my current grade, so I can tutor this as well as writing. I had a good classic lit background as part of my English degree curriculum, too.
I classify myself as an expert on this subject. I know all the actual spellings and rules vs. the "new" spellings in common usage on the Internet and elsewhere, which may be widespread but still are not accurate.
Help with writing of essays, fiction, pretty much any type of composition.
