Public Speaking

I took speech and drama in high school, where I joined the debate team and participated in speech competitions for oral interpretation and debate. My college classwork included not only the mandatory speech communications course but also readings of my poetry and leadership in an early "women's rap group." In my career as an army officer, I served as an academic counselor, company commander, and trainer of new instructors, all of which required that I speak to be heard and kept the attention of my audience. Finally, I taught college liberal arts courses for 30 years while leading the Arkansas National Organization for Women and writing and speaking on behalf of the ERA and other causes.

I earned an MFA in Creative Writing with a 4.0 GPA for all my graduate work. For 20 years, I have taught college composition, creative writing, technical writing, research writing, and writing for a variety of liberal arts courses, such as philosophy, ethics, and religious studies. I published three college textbooks in the past decade, and I now accept occasional assignments as a freelance editor and blogger. I can help students formulate a thesis statement, improve their sentence structure, add citations, correct punctuation, and think of a compelling title for their papers. For me, writing is fun, and helping others to write is enormously satisfying.

History

American History,

American History

I have a good grasp of the basic timeline of American history in terms of the conventional periods (colonial, revolutionary war, Louisiana Purchase and westward expansion, war with Mexico, suppressing Native Americans, slavery and Bloody Kansas, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and so forth. I am especially interested in the social history of the USA--the role of women, non-whites, religious groups, immigrants, the industrial working class, hippies, and all the poets, musicians, painters, preachers, photographers, and film artists who make up our dynamic and driven national culture.
Classics,

Classics

One benefit of attending rather conservative schools is that I studied, taught, and led discussions of the Western classics from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Plato's Republic, Pliny the Younger's letter to Trajan on Christianity to Shakespeare's Hamlet, and selections from the Summa of Thomas Aquinas. I love Sappho and Wordsworth, the book of Job, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Voltaire's Candide. I know the Analects of Confucius, the Buddha's Fire Sermon, and Gandhi's "Salt March" speech, as well as writers inspired by African cultures, such as Fanon, DuBois, and Achebe.
European History,

European History

Those who study the liberal arts must develop a strong sense of European history. What caused the rise and fall of the Roman Empire? Who wrote the Christian scriptures, and why? What accounts for the rise of nation-states in medieval and early modern Europe? How did England become the dominant world power in the 19th century? Was Russia ever a European country? Why was Europe convulsed by war in the first half of the 20th century? The search for answers to such questions inspires scholarship and deepens reflection on the mysteries of human nature.
Religion

Religion

I taught college survey courses on World Religions for the University of Phoenix (Axia College, online), Kaplan University (online), and Philander Smith College, where I also taught Biblical Traditions and Spiritual Writing. I still have course materials and textbooks from those courses and enjoyed teaching this subject matter. I do not indoctrinate; I inform my students.

Caring and Patient Tutor

Kathleen has been very helpful in guiding my high school student through final edits of his papers and making sure his arguments are solid. He finds that she takes the time to show him why he should make changes and I like the summaries she sends after the session.

Highly experienced writer and tutor

I needed some reminders on the basics of writing, and Dr. C was able to provide me with just that. After reviewing several pieces of my writing live, she went line by line with me on which words were unnecessary and how to shorten my thoughts for a better read. Sometimes its the little things that count, and I was reminded of that for any future writing.

Dr. K.C and I talked about the past and now. We also talked about The Great Gatsby. Lastly, we talked about how covid 19 changed many people’s lives. I would definitely recommend Dr.KC for anyone that needs help with anything that she can help with.

Most wonderful mentor

My 11 yo has the wildest imaginations and loves to write. I have always wanted to find a way to cultivate his interests, writing and oratory skills. I cannot be more thrilled to have found Kathleen via Wyzant. She has been an absolutely a wonder mentor to my child. Kathleen treats him with respect, leads him to think critically and lets him retain his voice and personality. He is excited to get on zoom ( " we call her the professor") every week to explore his writing in a very constructive and nurturing environment. I can't wait to see him grow as a human with Kathleen!

Impressed and Grateful!

Very patient with my son. He was having difficulty understanding the Sophocles plays for his freshman high school English class. I really like how she made connections between the plays and current events / real word examples. I hope to use her services again.

Dr. K.C and I talked about dystopian fictions. We talked about how good they are, but also the bad things that they can bring to the world. We also talked about how this world can be better and what change we want to see in the future. The specific book we were talking about was The Handmaids Tail. I feel like growing up more this story feels more and more relatable to real life. Dr. KC and I talked about other ways that dystopian fiction are related to real life and the challenges we go through.

Dr. K.C helped me with an essay for my American History class that's about the effects of the Civil War for everyone. We finished it and we also got to talk about it too. For example what everyone went through and what they did like their point of view. It was very helpful and interesting.
