About Karen

Hello everyone!

I teach ESL at the Northwest Arkansas Community College. I am passionate about helping students of all ages learn and be successful. I love to learn and I want to pass my enthusiasm for learning onto my students, whether it involves reading, math, writing or learning English as a Second Language. My goal is to find what my students are interested in and use their interests as a springboard to their learning.

I teach and tutor students of all ages. My bachelor's and master's degrees are in Elementary Education from Indiana University. In 2012, I graduated with a second master's in Teaching English as a Second Language from The University of Findlay in Ohio. Four years ago, I developed a free tutoring center for a nonprofit center. In addition, I have had my own tutoring business and taught ESL methods to English language teachers in Chinju, South Korea.

My students like my calm nature, patience, and passion. Parents tell me they can see I care for their child. It is my goal in tutoring to make each session interesting so the student likes tutoring. I use a variety of activities to teach the students and the activities are planned to meet the needs of each student.

I am looking forward to working with you or your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My bachelor's and master's degrees are both in Elementary Education. I taught 4th grade, substituted and tutored students in grades K-6. I have run my own tutoring business and set up a nonprofit tutoring center in Ohio. My tutoring methods include using games, task cards, and manipulatives to teach and reinforce the lessons. For some students, I help them develop interactive notebooks. My goal is to make the tutoring session enjoyable so the students see being tutored as a positive experience and not negative.

Elementary Math

I am tutoring a sixth grader in elementary math.

ESL/ESOL

Currently, I teach ESOL at Northwest Arkansas Community College. I have a Master's degree in Teaching English to Others as a Second Language. I am certified through WyzAnt to teach ESL.

Phonics

My bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education with a minor in reading. I studied phonics for my minor and again for TESOL master's. Currently, I use phonics in teaching English Language Learners at a community college. I believe the use of phonics is important in both reading and learning English.

Proofreading

I teach as an adjunct ESL professor at the Northwest Arkansas Community College. Students ask me to proofread their papers, speeches, and PowerPoint presentations. Proofreading is a part of my job that I love because I love helping others to be successful.

Reading

I am a current English for Bilingual Students, a Reading and Writing Instructor at Northwest Arkansas Community College. I have developed a Nonprofit Tutoring Center for Reading and Mathematics in Ohio. I have private Tutoring Experience in Reading. I am a former Title I Reading Teacher, a former 4th Grade Teacher. I have a B.S. & M.S. in Education M.A., TESOL Education.

Study Skills

Currently I teach a Successful First Year Student Class at a community college that includes teaching the students how to improve their study skills, listening ability, note taking and test taking skills. In this class, I also show the students how to find their Multiple Intelligences and their VARK strength (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) to study effectively. Teaching students to manage their time effective is another component in developing effective study skills. The activities and lessons I have created for this class would work well in a tutoring situation for students of all ages.
