Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I performed well on this subject when I took the exam before going to college. English is my best subject. I can also give tips to students who may be anxious.

ACT Reading

English and reading are my two best subjects. I have always performed highly in them while I was in school. I have strategies that can help any student learn and be successful.

I have taught and tutored a variety of students who have ADD/ADHD. I have tutored these students at every level (elementary through graduate school). I have taken multiple education classes at a graduate level and this has helped me, along with teaching, develop a method of working with this type of student.

American History

History is a passion of mine and I consider myself well-versed with the happenings of human history. I enjoyed each class I took in high school and in college. I can help anxious students with tips on remembering dates of significant events.

Career Development

I have worked for over four years with students in counseling them about career goals, looking and applying to colleges, and giving advice about what career paths to explore. I have worked with high school students, as well as college students. Depending on the student, I would do research prior to meeting with them so that I could be fully prepared for their questions and give them appropriate advice.

College Counseling

I have worked with non-traditional college students for 3.5 years. During this time they would come to me for advice--personal, professional, or school-related issues. I felt very comfortable in this role, as the students greatly appreciated my insight and would recommend others to come seek my advice. I had great success in helping these students.

I have been cooking and learning about the history, systems, and processes of cooking for over 15 years. I am interested in all facets of cooking and regularly cook for my family. I am well-versed in cooking and baking methods and preparations.

I have tutored a high school student and a graduate student with dyslexia. I did lots of research on how best to help them achieve success based on their age and was very effective, as I helped the high school student pass her GED and the graduate student do well on the GRE. I have several methods of helping these students.

Elementary Science

I routinely help my elementary aged niece with her homework and do projects with her. I am confident I can make science fun for even the most reluctant student. I have an understanding of science for adults as well, so I can further explain concepts to children.

English has always been my best subject. I studied it heavily in college and in graduate school (and have degrees in both). I can make any student understand anything about English.

I have always enjoyed learning about the world and its inhabitants. I have home-schooled a student in world geography. I greatly enjoy sharing this passion with others.

Government & Politics

I have home-schooled a student in American government. I have always been interested in sharing this knowledge with others. I am able to help students understand concepts in this subject easily.

I have taught all facets of grammar numerous times. I have strategies to help even the most struggling student succeed. I have a thorough understanding of this subject.

I have had several graduate level classes in education and special needs education. I have worked with students who need help improving their writing and have a variety tactics and tools. I am most effective with regular practice and implementation of tools.

I have taught all facets of this subject numerous times. Reading any type of literature has always been one of my favorite past times. I enjoy teaching any student the joys of reading.

I own all Apple products and have used them for decades. I know shortcuts, tools, and other information as it relates to the products. I am more at ease with Macintosh products than Windows-based products.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook for years and know how to color-code a calendar, make events, make reminders, and send emails. I am well-versed in other elements of Outlook and feel confident in using it to my full advantage. I can also teach others how to use it properly and to work for them, not against them.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint for many years, both in my studies and for professional purposes. I have an eye for design, so I can help make a PowerPoint look professional and appropriate for any task. I can help others design PowerPoints to "wow" any audience.

Microsoft Publisher

I have made handouts for students using Publisher for many years. I have also used Publisher for making pamphlets and other media for customers. I have also used Publisher for invitations, announcements, and the like.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows in every office setting where I have worked. I know how to make it work for me by using shortcuts and having an understanding of how the system works. I am comfortable using Windows for a variety of tasks.

I have taught English for many years at many different levels. I have a keen eye for catching mistakes and fixing them. I also can explain how to fix them and the reason they need to be fixed in the first place.

Public Speaking

I have previously taught Public Speaking at the college level. I taught students the art of Public Speaking by including lessons on poise, posture, history, enunciation, articulation, and grammar while teaching. Many students have found their voice while in my classes.

I have tutored many elementary aged children with reading strategies. I have also helped adults become better readers. I have several strategies that I can implement to assist any struggling reader.

I took a variety of religion classes in college (everything from Hinduism to Ancient Greek Religion and the role of religion in sociology). I have tutored and home-schooled students in world religions. I was an active participant in World Religion Day while in college each of my four years (I volunteered in booths and performed research for a variety of religions).

I am a very good speller, due in large part to my extensive knowledge of words and their origins. I have helped many struggling people learn how to spell better through straegies and tips. Becoming a better speller is more than just practice; I've found when helping adults or older children become better spellers, if I help them understand where a word comes from, they are more likely to remember how to spell it in the future.

I have an extensive understanding of how words are formed, where they come from, and how to use them. My vocabulary tricks and tips have helped many people struggling word usage rules. I have helped a student preparing for the GRE have a better grasp on how words work and helped her to a higher score than she ever imagined.

World History

History is a passion of mine. I enjoy reading about history and watch documentaries describing the events of the past. I can make history fun for any reluctant learner by connecting their life to the past and present.

I have taught writing to high school students and in college courses. I love to write and love to share that passion with others. I enjoy it so much that I have an MFA in creative writing. I can help with creative writing, as well as research papers. I can help any student at any level, even the most reluctant of writers.
