About Jean

I have been a math educator for 45 years. I began my career as a middle school teacher. When I pursued a masters degree in Math Ed. at Georgia State University, I knew I was interested in a bigger picture in mathematics education. Later I got a masters in mathematics at the University of North Texas and went on to get a Ph.D. in mathematics education at the University of Texas at Austin. My real interest was in the preparation of teachers at both the elementary and secondary levels. I have prided my self on my work in helping young people become effective teachers.

At the University of Central Arkansas I have taught both mathematics courses (geometry is my love) and mathematics education courses. I have also run several grants for teachers. My favorite part of this work has been to coach teachers in their own classrooms. I have loved working with these teachers and their students at all different levels from grades 3 - 12. I love working with students one-on-one because I have a unique way of understanding their difficulties and then empowering them to learn and understand.

I have taught the mathematics content for preservice elementary and secondary teachers and am very familiar with the curriculum in the schools and the Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks. I know the curriculum in depth as it vertically develops from grade to grade. I also know the basic courses at the college level. This knowledge helps me work with students to make sure they get the basics and are prepared to move ahead. I teach for understanding and use many representations and manipulative to help students get a concept. I also am very good with the graphing calculator and technology.
I use formative assessment throughout sessions to make sure students are progressing and to see what difficulties they may still be having with a topic.

I am available on M-W-F afternoons after 3; Monday evenings and some Thursday evenings. My current rate is $45/hour. I also offer session packages at a discount - contact me for details.
I look forward to hearing from you. I hope I can turn math troubles into discovery and good problem solving skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

I have taught discrete mathematics at the college level - 6 terms at Northern Arizona University and 1 term at University of Central Arkansas. I also incorporate discrete mathematics in several of the mathematics education courses I teach. This includes topics such as logic, sequences and series, graph theory, and discrete probability.

Finite Math

Finite mathematics is related to discrete mathematics which I have taught at the college level. I have also taught business mathematics for several years at the college level. I am very good at bringing students who are math phobic through topics of probability, finance math, sequences & series, statistics and linear programming.

Prealgebra

I have developed a lot of material for the Prealgebra classroom - I seek to create meaningful, engaging, and effective activities for students. I have good experience in the testing that occurs for PreAlgebra and Algebra I.
