Wheaton College (Media Arts)
I recently completed prerequisites for medical school and completed the MCAT in the summer of 2015. I have been working on a second bachelor's degree in biology and have led many study groups in biology/chemistry classes. Prior to becoming a student again, I was a high school teacher in Rhode Island and a hired instructor for an associate's degree program in Chicago, IL.
Because I have been on both sides of the classroom, both as a teacher and a student, I understand that many people learn in different ways. I am able to explain course material in different ways so that students are able to grasp core concepts and not just memorize certain facts. My favorite part of teaching is when students discover that they are capable of learning material that was once thought of as "impossible," creating a desire to continue learning and working hard to succeed in the classroom.
I have completed and excelled in classes to fulfill my premed requirements. I tutored classmates in biochemistry, biology, and organic chemistry. As a prior teacher, I understand the importance of discovering unique ways to understand and not just memorize course material.
As someone who had to work hard, study long hours, read and re-read class material, I understand that not everyone is naturally proficient in the sciences. I was able to learn different techniques and ways of comprehending material that I would love to pass on to you and help you succeed. Feel free to message me with any questions! We went over blood coagulation and blood groups. He explains things in a simplified way for me to understand. He had neat and cool ways to help remember the steps, which is EXTREMELY helpful when you have to compile a lot of information!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed the following classes and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I have also reviewed them in preparation for the MCAT and received a competitive grade:
Introduction to Chemistry
General Chemistry I
General Chemistry II
Organic Chemistry I
Organic Chemistry II
I received an A in both Organic Chemistry I and II. I maintained a 4.0 GPA in the sciences and created study packets for other students. I also peer tutored classmates and helped them improve their grades.
I have completed premed courses and excelled in anatomy and physiology. I have participated in cadaver labs and have studied these courses for the MCAT. I have been asked to come back and speak to previous physiology due to my success in the subject.
I received one of the highest grades in zoology. I was exempt from final exams and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I understand the concepts of zoology from an evolutionary standpoint as well as the taxonomy and traits down to the genus classification.
