About Anna

I have worked with elementary aged children through public schools for 10 years, completing evaluations for students with disabilities. Recently, I have received training to provide reading instruction for children using the Orton-Gillingham method, a multi-sensory, structured language approach.

I love encouraging children and watching them experience success!

My specialization is in reading instruction for children that have difficulty with reading at the word level. I'm trained to provide instruction starting with the most basic component of reading-phonemes-and building from there. Students practice skills to the point of mastery before we move on, and once skills are learned, we will continue to review them so that learned skills are retained. The multi-sensory approach is helpful for students that have processing difficulties.

The same multi-sensory, structured approach described above can be used to improve spelling skills. Additionally, I can recommend and assist in handwriting intervention/practice.

I would love to meet with you and begin helping you experience success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a school psychology specialist, part of my role for the last 10 years has been to recommend interventions for students with ADHD. This has included recommendations to improve basic reading and math skills. I have also recommended interventions for organization, study skills, and behavior.

Aspergers

I have worked as a school psychology specialist for 10 years. In this role, I have completed evaluations for children with autism spectrum disorder, including children previously diagnosed with Aspergers. My role has also included creating instructional recommendations, creating behavior support plans, and coordinating with speech pathologists and occupational therapists to understand and meet the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder. I am knowledgeable in the differences in learning styles, social approaches, sensory needs, and the emotional and behavioral needs of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Drawing

I have a B.F.A. in art. I love drawing with ink or charcoal. I have experience with still life, landscape, portrait, and live model.

Dyslexia

Over the past couple of years, I have been learning about characteristics and interventions for dyslexia. I've read Sally Shaywitz's Overcoming Dyslexia, Essentials of Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention, and the extensive resource guide included in the Process Assessment of the Learner, Second Edition. I've attended workshops by Dawn Flannagin and Nancy Mather, which focused on Assessment (and some intervention) for learning disabilities, including dyslexia. I've sought further resources online. I have learned about specific interventions for students with dyslexia.

In September 2014, I received a 45 hour training called "Connections: Orton Gillingham in 3D" which prepared me to provide reading/spelling instruction for children with dyslexia. The approach uses a systematic, multi-sensory techniques to lock in literacy skills.

Painting

I have a B.F.A. in art. I have studied painting at the college level, including watercolor, oils and acrylic. I have had art displayed and sold in a gallery, an artist's collective, and in private businesses.

Special Needs

I have worked as a school psychology specialist for 10 years. In this role, I have completed evaluations for special needs children, including children with autism spectrum disorder, children with learning disabilities, and children with ADHD. Part of my role has been to provide instructional recommendations for these children. I have also created behavior support plans for children with special needs. I am knowledgeable in differences in learning styles for a variety of special needs.
