Hi, my name is Yvonne. I have a BA (1983) in mathematics with a minor in psychology, and I have an MA (1986) in mathematics with an emphasis in education. I also earned my secondary teacher certification in mathematics (1984). I have not kept it current, however, because professionally I have been working at the college and community college level. I have been teaching and tutoring pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, and business calculus at the college and community college level for over 30 years. I have also taught ACT prep classes to high school juniors and seniors. My private one on one tutoring experience includes ACT prep, PRAXIS prep, high school algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, and business calculus.
Most recently, since 2009, I have been tutoring at a local community college in their tutoring center. Most of the tutoring in the lab is with students taking elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, or business calculus. I also tutor students taking Spanish 1, Spanish 2, or Spanish 3. I do not have a degree in Spanish, but my mother and her family are native speakers, and I learned from them, and I’ve also taken some college level Spanish classes to improve my skills.
My tutoring methodology has been to let the session be, for the most part, student directed. You may already have an assignment from a class you are taking, or perhaps I have given you a worksheet for a particular topic. I like to see how you would approach the problem and I then provide the guidance to keep you going. We start each session with any questions you might have and go from there.
I am a patient and experienced tutor, and I really enjoy working with students and helping them learn. I love when a student understands a concept, when it clicks, and I can share that moment with them. I love seeing students succeed. It is really gratifying to see a student go from struggling with math to understanding math.
