As a teacher certified in both Special Education and 8-12 Social Studies, I have experience with a diverse group of students. I co-taught 9th grade Biology, 9th grade English, 10th grade English and 10th grade World History. Tutoring before or after school, as well as lessons tailored to meet a student's needs were all part of my plan to help students learn.
I also acted as a tutor to a family of home-schooled children. I taught the entire Enlish Language Arts curriculum for 3rd and 6th grade. We had fun, made up games on the spot to reinforce concepts, and moved at the pace set by the students, as they demonstrated mastery during the year.
I have refreshed my math skills with Khan Academy. Math is fun and Algebra is a way of solving puzzles. Once students get past the mental block of concrete versus abstract, Algebra can become a favorite.
I have my undergraduate degree in Psychology and still find it fascinating, even today. Self- awareness, knowledge of human growth and development and communication skills are all part of this science. Additionally, I co-taught Biology with several different teachers and loved finding hands-on ways to explain the concepts so my students could understand them more deeply and remember them well.
I am a published author, have co-taught 9th and 10th grade English for 4 years and also tutored English Language Arts with a family of home-schooled children. Even today, I assist my husband with revising, editing and proofreading for his college courses. Language helps shape our reality and reading opens up the entire world to us. They are vital skills that all students deserve to feel strong in.
I would love to give you encouragement, work with you to diagnose any gaps in your learning and help you get back to the fun and fascination that new knowledge can give us. I do believe we are all life-long learners. A strong foundation and confidence in yourself will get you well on the path to success. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
