About Mark

Hello, my name is Mark. I graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in the summer of 2014 with an MA in English and a total of 31 credit hours. Since then I have taught Composition I and Composition II at both ASU and Mid-South Community College in West Memphis.

As a Graduate Assistant, I tutored writing to a variety of students at the college level, including ESL students (English as a Second Language). The experience I gained while tutoring allowed me to develop as an academic and relate this experience to interacting on an intellectual level with students. Among my peers in the Writing Center, I was voted as the Best Tutor and Most Dependable for the 2013-2014 academic year. While tutoring students, I spent time sufficiently reading and understanding their individual writing assignments. I allowed each tutee the time to express any concerns he or she had with the assignment, and then felt it was my responsibility to identify what most needed developed. Then, I explained clearly and concisely what was required for the student to improve his or her work not only for that specific assignment but for all future essays. An unofficial motto at the Astate Writing Center was not to make better writing, but to make better writers, an ideology to which I continue to prescribe for my own classroom discourse.

I have over two years’ experience instructing and tutoring composition/writing skills to students at the college level. I have highly effective skills in working one on one with individuals (including English as a Second Language and persons with reading deficiencies) to help them better understand what is required of them for formally written college essays and other written assignments. Many of the classes I have took as an undergrad and as a graduate student centered around Literature, and my Graduate Thesis was a creative novella that was inspired by classical several genres of literature.

If you choose to work with me I will spend my time not only helping you to understand the assignment completely but how to achieve your goals successfully.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
