I am a life-long learner who believes learning is the key to success in our diverse and ever-changing society. Learning can take many forms, whether it is learning a subject, trade, or even social skills. I am a certified elementary school teacher in Arkansas and have taught second grade for the past 8 years. I currently attend graduate school with the hopes of becoming a licensed professional counselor. The reason I want to be a counselor is the same reason I want to tutor; I am looking to work with people on a one-to-one basis (or small group) because I feel like I can better help people in this fashion.
My very first job was tutoring for Texarkana College while I was a student. I fell in love with helping people become more successful and found that they were extremely appreciative of my help. It is a wonderful feeling to see someone's face light up when they finally understand something that you have helped them with. You will find that I am intelligent, patient, and dedicated to helping you or your child learn.
I am an avid reader and have been since I first learned to read. Writing is a subject that I am highly gifted in, and I love to share my talents with others. When I tutored at TC, writing was one subject that I was consistently asked to tutor and had many students return again and again. Being an elementary school teacher, I have many professional development hours in teaching strategies, phonics, and reading for comprehension.
I am extremely knowledgable in Common Core curriculum. I worked with a team to study and develop curriculum for second grade Common Core. I understand the "big ideas" associated with the curriculum and how the standards develop from grade to grade. I am an excellent problem solver and have the computer experience necessary to help you succeed in Common Core.
I am highly qualified to teach every subject in the elementary school curriculum, and I especially love math. In addition, I am a great test taker and have much to share on test-taking strategies. Being a counselor-in-training, I can also help with relaxation techniques for test anxiety and helping to increase self-esteem. While I believe there is more to learning than what is on a test, I also realize the importance of high-stakes testing in our educational system.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions or to schedule lessons. I love to help people and see them become successful in every way possible! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher in Arkansas, which uses Common Core for its curriculum. I am familiar with the elementary curriculum and worked on a team to create a curriculum with lesson plans and activities for second grade, including high-order questioning, differentiated learning experiences, and common assessments. I have taught Common Core for the past three years.
