About Keith

I’m a retired professor and fourth generation educator. At sixteen, I began my college career with eighteen credit hours already on my transcript. While attending Henderson State University (HSU), I taught private lessons in music and tutored students both on and off campus. Along with my studies in computer science, music, and general education, I studied art and creative writing with a list of renowned professors.

I graduated Cum Laude from HSU (3.68 grade point average) and went on to Southern Methodist University for my Masters degree (3.86 grade point average). While at HSU, I worked with the Gifted and Talented Study program for High School students. At SMU I was a Teaching Assistant in music theory, aural training, MIDI, music synthesis, and electronic music. Between terms I taught classes for the SMU Summer Conservatory.

With over forty years of experience, I have taught Music Performance/Scheduling, Songwriting & Composition, Audio Engineering & Production, Music Business, Music Theory, Guitar, Bass, Piano, Voice, Music Literature, Music History, Commercial Music Production, MIDI & Electronic Music, and more. My focus has always been to teach my students to plan, think ahead, and solve the problems that inevitably arise. In that vein, I specialized in Project Management, Curriculum Development, Academic Advising, Degree Planning, Creative Writing, SAT Prep. I'm also well-versed in Digital Photography, General Education, and Web Design.

The best teachers have a mutually beneficial relationship with their students. Learning is not a solitary endeavor - it's shared. And when it's most successful, both the teacher's and student's lives are enriched by the experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I earned both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Music Composition. I've taught music composition as a class and privately for over a dozen years. As part of my work as a college professor, I developed a course in songwriting.

Ear Training

As well as taking ear training as an undergraduate, I taught it at both Southern Methodist University and Collin College. My students gave me excellent evaluations. Many of them have gone on to work as singers, composers, music directors, and instrumentalists in the music business.

General Music

I have a bachelors and master in music. For one year, I held the position of Associate Professor of Music and for ten years I was a Professor of Music. I've taught guitar, voice, composition, conducting, created and directed a two performing ensembles, worked in recording studios, and performed for audiences all over the country.

Guitar

I've been playing guitar for over fifty years. My past work includes recording sessions for jingles, film scores, and music for television. I've recorded five solo albums and performed on over a dozen more.

Music Production

I've mentored signer/songwriters, folk artists, bands, and New Age artists - showing them how to start their own record labels, publishing companies, and market their material. I taught audio engineering and built a department up that increased enrollment by 300% in less than two years time. My students have been nominated for multiple Grammys, Emmys, Clios (advertising), Tonys, and Oscars.

Piano

As an undergraduate, I studied piano with three different instructors. I taught Beginning Piano Classes and private lessons at Collin College. Piano is a primary instrument for all composers and I have both a bachelors and masters in music composition. I've recorded two piano albums and engineered/produced nine piano CDs for Warner Bros Publishing.

Voice (Music)

I've sung for studio sessions including jingles for a number of commercial clients. I was a member of my college choir and a regular guest soloist in three church choirs. I took two years of voice as an undergraduate and have coached singers who were pursuing careers in the entertainment industry.
