About Trenton

As a Biology graduate, I specialize in tutoring general biological topics such as the cell life cycle and basic evolutionary theory. I also emphasize developing the skills needed to become an effective student, such as basic reasoning and logic, reading comprehension, and word-problem solving strategies. Included in these basic skills are general computer usage skills.

My background working with students covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act has honed my ability to assess the comprehension levels of students and tailor explanations to individuals, improving their ability to understand their readings and critical reasoning with the subject matter.

I am always available by email, so please ask me questions! Helping you achieve your goals is my passion.

**Please note that if you need tutoring within 48 hours, Wyzant's online tutoring interface will be the best method for us to work together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have studied English grammar, Spanish grammar, and I also create languages in order to experiment with linguistic concepts and grammatical conventions.

Organic Chemistry

I have studied Organic Chemistry as part of my Biology studies for three semesters, during which time I developed a deep appreciation for the amount of conceptualization and critical thinking necessary to do well in "Orgo", as it is affectionately called. While in lab section, I received top marks for my technique and research skills as well as my chemical reasoning, and I have helped other students achieve a "B" or higher in the course. In addition to over a year and a half of in-class experience, I have retained my textbook, notes, and various other resources to aid in my own study and communication of the subject. For these reasons, in addition to three years of general tutoring experience, I am qualified to tutor in organic chemistry.

Reading

With over 15 years of critical text analysis, research, and composition experience, I am uniquely suited to helping students improve not only their vocabulary and grammar skills, but also their critical reasoning and text comprehension skills. My techniques revolve around a Socratic approach tempered with ample reference to etymology, history, philosophy, and constructivist theory of learning; to put it in plain English, I always aim to engage the student with her or his own thought processes and encourage a deeper understanding of both the text, the intentions of the author(s), and the relationship between the written word and concepts being communicated.
