About David

I've been an elementary teacher for the last 19 years. I love teaching all subject areas in the elementary curriculum, with reading, writing, and math/CGI (problem solving) being my strongest areas.

My favorite approach is the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model, in which I first model exactly the skill, then guide the student through the process, then give the student the opportunity to work independently. I love to see my students succeed and grow in skill and confidence!

I provide essential foundational skills by engaging the student with hands on math tools which make math concepts more tactile and visual. We then apply these skills to real world problem solving situations to engage the student in thinking mathematically.

I use the reading/writing connection model, with reading experiences which expose the student to correct grammar and usage, along with frequent writing opportunities to give the student the opportunity to respond to the text in a way that develops both writing skills and reading comprehension.

I use hands on experiences as much as possible to engage a student's natural curiosity, as well as developing scientific methodology through observation, data collection, forming testable hypotheses, testing through experimentation, and recording measurable results.

I have years of experience developing decoding skills through Abeka phonics, which progressively expands the students' understanding of how letters combine to make sounds, including those nuanced situations in which the same sounds are made by different letter combinations, or different sounds are made by the same letter combinations.

I'm looking forward to working with students who need that little extra push to become proficient and go beyond that to excel in school and life! Please feel free to contact me so we can begin this adventure together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been a K-6 certified elementary schoolteacher for 19 years. I'm trained in the ELLA and ELL literacy programs, and have completed the 4 year CGI math course. My teaching method is based on the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, in which I first clearly model the skill being taught, then coach the student through multiple opportunities for guided practice, and finally give them the opportunity to apply the skill being taught independently.

Elementary Math

CGI Mastery program, I completed 4 years of training

Phonics

I have received training in Abeka and Benchmark's "Spiral Up" phonics programs. I've used Abeka with small reading groups for the last 15 years, and began Spiral Up last year after attending 9 hours of workshops.

Reading

Reading: 30 hours training in ELLA, along with 16 years of experience in this program. 30 Hours of ELL training provided by Linda Franco, along with 14 years of program implementation. I have 19 years total experience working primarily with 2nd grade students, including ESL students, with DRA levels ranging from A to 40+.

Thorough first session!

I like the way David started our session with tests and an assessment of where my daughter is currently with math and reading comprehension. I think our plan will be more effective and measurable because of the testing.
