About Camille

My love for teaching is a direct result of my love for learning. While humanities can prove one of the hardest subjects to teach, my passion for history and civics has served me well in my career as a tutor and I am happy to say that I have seen not only an improvement in my students' grades, but a lifelong appreciation for the subjects I teach. In my first semester as an academic tutor in the University of Arkansas Student-Athlete Success Center, my students averaged a 3.6 GPA in, one of the highest in the department.

I specialize in U.S. and World History, but as I like to say, "To study history is to study everything!" A successful student of history will also find himself excelling in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing, skills essential to academic success at every level. My approach is to first assess my students in the above areas and then focus on specific weaknesses that create a barrier to being able to learn and enjoy historical coursework.

I have tutored a range of students facing varied challenges. From college athletes struggling with time management to a deaf student feeling overwhelmed with lecturing and language gaps, all of my students have seen marked improvement in their comfort level with the material and semester grades.

As I am currently a student of history myself, I spend a lot of my free time doing my own research, reading, and writing. For this reason, I have a cancellation policy of at least 24 hours so that I can appropriately schedule my work around my students' schedules. I also promise to do my part and respond to emails within 1 hour, as long as they are sent between 9 A.M and 9 P.M.

I know that academic success requires an environment conducive to learning and for that reason, I prefer to hold appointments on the University of Arkansas campus. However, I am happy to travel to other locations if it proves more convenient.

Being a student of history requires me to present my research orally frequently to a range of audiences, including professors and advisors. I have also participated in pageants and consistently ranked highly in the interview categories.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Arkansas, where I dual-majored in African-American Studies. I am currently pursuing a Master's in 20th Century United States History, also from the University of Arkansas. In undergrad, I was employed on campus as a tutor for student-athletes in the areas of U.S. History, World History, African-American Studies, and American Studies. I am currently a member of Phi Alpha Theta Historians' Honor Society, as well as the Southern Historians Association.

Throughout high school and college, I tutored a student who was completely deaf in one ear and equipped with a cochlear implant in the other. His difficulty hearing lectures and language gaps resulting from losing his hearing at a young age presented us with a unique set of challenges that we overcame together. He is currently an extremely successful student at Iowa State University on scholarship.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope that I can be a helping hand in your pursuit of historical genius!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am currently getting my Master's in American History and graduated with a Bachelor's in History in 2014. I have a 3.75 GPA and am a member of the American Historical Association, the Southern Historical Association, and the Agricultural History Society. I have tutored collegiate athletes in American History and completed numerous research papers in my field.

English

More about my English/Writing qualifications:

I tutored several high school students in English Composition and grammar and subsequently, many college athletes in English Comp I and II, as well as American Studies and History, which require a strong grasp on reading comprehension, composition, and grammar.

Hard Of Hearing

I have tutored a deaf student for over 5 years, transitioning with him from high school to college. I have training on various hearing devices and the challenges associated with education for hard of hearing students. With my student, I learned that it is best to break information into small bits and utilize active learning methods because the physical challenge of hearing makes listening to and learning from a lecture nearly impossible.

Social Studies

In my undergraduate coursework, I completed courses in political science, anthropology, and various social studies. I have also tutored high school and college students in a variety of courses related to social studies, including political science, American studies, and U.S. Government. Additionally, I have real work experience in the area of civics, having interned with a U.S. Senator last summer.
