About Dr. Pamela

I have a Ph.D. in chemistry and have taught chemistry courses at both 2- and 4-year colleges for 15 years. I specialize in high school, A.P., and college level chemistry courses. I help students develop the conceptual, mathematical, and problem-solving skills necessary to do well in chemistry.

I make concepts understandable by using everyday materials and examples to which the students can relate. I bring a chemistry set to every session so that students can visualize what is being discussed. I also use many handouts and worksheets that I prepare ahead of time so that students get extra practice and have clear notes.

What do I like most about teaching? I especially enjoy helping students grow in self confidence and self esteem as they master difficult topics.

In addition to teaching chemistry I have done chemical research involving fuel cell electrocatalysts and synthesis (meaning "to make or build") of transition metal pyridylimido complexes. I've also worked as a Scientific Information Analyst and have edited chemistry texts and educational materials for McGraw-Hill. In addition to teaching I love organic gardening, playing music (harmonica, violin, Native American flute), and am in the midst of building my own straw-bale house!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I consider myself a slow learner and Pamela has been excellent at working with my learning abilities, breaking things down, while also helping me understand the overall concepts. She is patient and VERY knowledgeable! I highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a great tutor!
