About John

I have a passion for languages. I am a native Spanish speaker who majored in English in college. I have experience tutoring college students in English and Spanish composition. I have been teaching myself French, and as a tutor I believe every student has the ability to speak a language fluently if they dedicate the right amount of time and effort to learning it. I like to encourage my students to love the language they are learning and to appreciate it not just to pass a class, but to acquire a lifelong skill that opens up many new and exciting opportunities. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

Spanish is my native tongue and I love it! I get disappointed every time I meet a person who took Spanish for two years in high school and who can't even express a sentence in Spanish. Learning a language cannot be about learning a bunch of rules that with time people forget, learning a language must be about engaging in the new language with passion and purpose, not about the pointless memorization of grammar rules. As a tutor, I want my students to see the beauty of Spanish for what it is: the third most spoken language in the world, the second most important language in the US, and a gateway to a new and diverse culture.
