Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I received a perfect score in math when I took the ACT years ago and math has always been one of my strongest subjects. In part, it was my aptitude for and enjoyment of math that led me to pursue the math-based career of structural engineering. ACT math is interesting in that it covers a variety of math problems with practical applications. I am happy to help others do well on the ACT since I know it can be a stressful time.

Algebra 2

Algebra is an integral part of engineering and is one of the key problem-solving tools used by engineers. As a consulting structural engineer and engineering professor I have utilized algebra almost daily in my work for over 20 years. In addition, many of the engineering courses I taught require a strong foundation in algebra. Teaching algebra based courses served to sharpen and reinforce my skills my algebra skills as well as my skills in the specific subject matter.

American History

I find history to be particularly interesting and feel we have a lot we can learn from the past. I am very well-read, keep up with current events and how they relate to past events, and have a good head for facts. I am continually answering questions from my son as he studies different periods in history and becomes curious to know more.

Architecture

I have a Bachelor's degree in architectural engineering, which combines architecture and engineering into one curriculum. I have also developed and taught university level courses in architectural engineering. My career includes over 15 years of experience in building design and construction and I am a US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy Environmental Design Accredited Professional.

Civil Engineering

I have a master's degree and PhD in civil engineering and have developed and taught engineering courses at the university level at both Kansas State University and West Point. My career also includes over 15 years of structural engineering consulting experience, including design and analysis.

Geometry

Geometry is an integral part of structural engineering. As a consulting structural engineer and engineering professor I have utilized geometry often in my work for over 20 years. In addition, a number of the engineering courses I have taught require a strong knowledge of geometry. Using geometry to lay out a structure or determine how the forces are acting on one has provided me with numerous opportunities to practically apply geometry beyond the classroom.

Logic

I have a PhD in Civil Engineering, which is a logic-based discipline. My work as a structural engineer and as an engineering professor has provided me with numerous opportunities to apply logic daily. Structural engineering is an interesting combination of art, science and logic which requires balanced abilities to be done well. In addition, I often get to engage with the logic of my 12-year old son which can be quite a mind-expanding challenge.

Prealgebra

Math is an important part of life and I have found algebra to particularly useful throughout my life and career. Doing well in math has been one of my strengths throughout school and into my engineering work. I am happy to help students understand some of the basic principles and concepts that lead into algebra, which I believe is important in and of itself and for the problem-solving skills it cultivates.

Proofreading

I am a writer, avid reader, and published technical author. My college education included technical writing along with the standard English courses. I have also served as editor for newsletters and have edited technical publications. Friends, family and colleagues often request I proofread their writing because they know I will be thorough and provide useful feedback.

Reading

Reading is one of my passions and one of my primary learning methods. I am a life-long avid reader and have been known to spend hours in a library or engaged in a good book. I have probably read thousands of books, magazines and technical articles spanning a wide variety of topics. Some books I engage with once and others offer new discoveries with each subsequent read. I enjoy opportunities to spark the love of reading in others.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry and algebra in particular are important tools in engineering. I have used these and related math extensively throughout my engineering career and also as an engineering professor.

Vocabulary

I am a life-long learner and avid reader with a wide variety of interests. My interests, studies and experiences have given me many opportunities to build a strong and varied vocabulary. I have probably read thousands of books, magazines and technical articles spanning a wide variety of topics. I have personally found reading and practical life applications to be very effective methods of learning new words.

Writing

I enjoy writing and am a published technical author. I also read extensively, which I believe is important in cultivating better writing skills. Though my college education was in a technical field, I completed a number of writing courses. Many of my other courses also required extensive writing.
