Even before my undergraduate I have always loved helping other and serving them. I was the kind of person that would ask to rake people’s yard because I knew that it was through service that I could learn so much from others. Starting in my undergraduate, I began to realize that I could also help and serve others through teaching them the information I had learned. Instead of plowing forward, most of my time in university was spent doing school and helping international students get accustomed to life here in America. In fact, seeing them grow and be successful became a great joy of mine.

After my undergraduate my wife and I moved to China where we have been English teachers in a university for the past four years. We each had upwards of 300 students every semester and loved going above and beyond the call of duty. We gave homework, played games, and met with our students outside the classroom. Though our formal job was to teach them ESL, I found a passion for teaching that was more than a collection of PowerPoint lectures. As a result, teaching is more than simply speaking to the student, but about speaking with the student. My wife and I loved our time in China, but due to COVID-19, and other issues, we had to pack up our family and leave our life there.

Now, we are back in the States. I am finishing up my last semester in my graduate program, and we have taken on several other hats to serve others. We have become small business owners of a candle company, we have become foster care parents, we have served our families whom we have not gotten to see in a very long time, and we continue to serve internationals here. Until now, I have not lost focus of one of the greatest satisfactions in life, helping others and equipping them so that they might reach their goals. Or said in another way, we enjoy being stepping stones and serving people in order for them to complete the tasks that lay ahead of them.

Microsoft Excel,

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel for many years now. I love to play around with it and create things that should not necessarily be created in Excel, like board games. In addition, I do the accounting for my family's two businesses, so I use Excel on a daily basis. Beyond that, I continue to help others manage their Excel sheets and help them wit their bookkeeping.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

Though I got a relatively late start to public speaking, I was more or less thrown into the deep waters of the public speaking discipline. I had upwards of 300 students a semester and loved the challenge of keeping their attention. During that time, my wife and I would host large gathering of students ranging upwards of 400 people at one time. In addition, I regularly preached in front of an international congregation of around 20-30 people for a year. On top of that, I continue to do weekly coaching and sermon preparation for others and have done so for almost a year now.

In my undergraduate, I was certified in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and began tutoring international students. In addition, I worked in my university's International Office. After graduation my wife and I taught ESL for four years abroad in a Chinese university. Due to COVID, my family had to return to the States and have since then moved to tutoring internationals online and locally.

English

English,

English

I have taught English for four years in a Chinese university. Though most of the time I was teaching ESL, it made it to where I have a firm grasp of the foundation of English language, the means to explain things in simple ways, and the diligence to do so with people who see English in a very uniquely difficult way. My focus tends to be on conversational English, public speaking, as well as cultural rules regarding the English language.

IELTS,

IELTS

While I have never taken the IELTS, I have coached many people through the process. As much as I could say every one of them passed, the truth is it is a very difficult test. The IELTS test opens up many doors for internationals and living abroad and seeing the test from their eyes and informally coaching my students for years has helped me to gain experience specific to this test. Unfortunately, much of the work required to pass this test is mostly on the student and even includes a very brief but very intense speaking portion of the test which is where I have found many of my students struggle.

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

Not only do both of my degrees rely heavily on Biblical Studies, I also joined the Evangelical Theology Society during my undergraduate studies. ETS is Biblical Studies utilizing high scholarship and academic research. More than what is seen on paper though, Biblical Studies is about whether one actually reads the text (not just hear about the text). Since university I have been practicing on memorizing the Psalms and find great instruction in Paul's letters.
Religion

Religion

My major in my undergraduate studies was Christians Studies with an Emphasis in Missions and other religions. In addition, I have spent four years in SE Asia surround by cultural Buddhism and animism. On top of this, I am now in my last semester of seminary majoring in Intercultural Studies which includes classes such as: Anthropology, Contextualization, and a Religious Practicum.

Fun, Patient & knowledgeable Tutor

I asked Josh to help in math, especially for word problems, for my 10-Year old daughter. My daughter loved the first lesson she had with him and asked me to continue with him herself! This was pretty amazing, since kids tend to despise tutor times, especially in math. Josh is a real treasure!
