During my time with the district, I worked with many deaf and hard of hearing students after school in order for them to pass TEKS and later the STARR test in the area of math. The majority of my students were able to pass with commended.

I have been blessed to work with some amazing students. I have worked with 2nd graders in reading. One of these students has dyslexia and was a challenge; however, it was a challenge I rose to meet head on. The student was able to improve their reading level from Kindergarten to 1st in a one year period of working with them.

I also was able to work with a 10th grader in Algebra I. This student has ADHD, which caused me to use a variety of techniques to help the student remain focused during our sessions. The student started with a 36% in the class and managed to finish the year with an 82%.

I was blessed enough to meet an adult, who was hard of hearing needing to learn English as a second language. I was able to use techniques learned during my student teaching in order to help the student learn sounds, combination of sounds and rules for spelling, which ultimately helped the student communicate better in English.

I love the opportunity to work with others and help them see material in a different light. My ultimate goal is to make what they are learning in the classroom translates into the real world, so they have a better chance of retaining the material.

They came to me reading at a kindergarten level and at the end of the year, they were reading at a 1st grade level. The strategies I use help students to sound out words and become better readers.

Writing

I have recently graduated with my Master's in Creative Writing. The biggest challenge students have with writing is the blank page before them. Helping students use outlines, webs, or prompts allows them to begin creating. Once students have a start, then we work on revising to ensure the writing supports the main idea. Once they have revised, then we work on editing. In this process we are looking for capitalization, punctuation and spelling. I believe this gives students an opportunity to gain confidence and find pleasure in writing.
