About Amy

As a former public school teacher, I relished working one on one with struggling students. I believe all students can excel with the right encouragement and the right teacher. As a young elementary student, I struggled to learn due to both hearing and sight deficits. It was the interest of a concerned teacher that changed my life! I strive to help my students and impact them as well! Although I am now retired and homeschooled my two children, I have maintained my AR teaching license. I am certified for all subjects 4th-8th and have a Masters degree in Special education as well.

I struggled with learning Math as a young student so i can relate to their 'math phobia." Once I became a teacher, I realized if a student is struggling, it may take more than one approach to reach them. Once I lessen their fear of the subject, they can slowly build up their confidence and excel at their own rate. Often their fear of failure holds them back from their full potential as successful learners. For example, learning fractions can be intimidating to many children but a simple pizza can remove all fear of this misunderstood math concept.

As a young child, I was an avid reader and books allowed me to travel anywhere my imagination could take me. I read to my children as infants and they were both reading before age 5. Additionally, my training both as a homeschooler and certified teacher for over 15 years gave me endless opportunities to teach phonics, beginning reading, spelling and related subjects.

As a Special education teacher, I had the opportunity to teach in an elementary setting which proved invaluable. That experience taught me how young children have a reason for resisting a lesson. They are often overwhelmed and don't know how to express it. As a preschool teacher I have made it a priority to teach my 4 year olds how to ask for help.
As a homeschooler, I was fond of the Abeka system but I have used a variety of programs. I am licensed to teach English, Math, History and Science for grades 4th -8th as well as pre k -12th in Special Education.

Experienced help for your child can make all the difference. Please feel free to contact me regarding your child's academic needs. As a parent and teacher, I can relate to your concerns and hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
