With a master's degree in curriculum design and instructional leadership along with classroom experience with kindergarten, third grade, middle school, and adults, I have in-depth knowledge of how people learn. There is no "one size fits all" course of instruction that will suit every learner, which is why students so often don't get it and quickly fall behind. My approach is to get to know the student first, determining his or her learning style, multiple intelligences, likes and dislikes, and personal aspirations. From this profile, I analyze the subject matter to be acquired, including standards and benchmarks, or project deadlines. From an overwhelming goal, I create bite size instructional objectives that can readily be mastered. Each is also a building block, designed solely around the learner, but with a clear blueprint of what is on the horizon. Success builds confidence and enthusiasm, and with these two traits laying a solid foundation, students reach their goals.
My forte is in adaptability and creativity. I will find new and exciting ways of presenting materials, such as the use of streaming video, to enhance the learning experience. Reading and writing are intertwined and must be combined with critical thinking skills, even in the primary grades. The ability to read, analyze, and respond in writing in a coherent, logical fashion will ensure success at all levels of learning. My aspiration is to ignite a passion for learning in each student, one that comes from a track record of academic accomplishment. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
