About Bonnie

I enjoy helping my students love learning. Each child is unique in their learning needs, strengths, and weaknesses. But every child can learn!

Currently I teach special education students in both a pull-out classroom and co-teaching classes, in grades Kindergarten to Third Grade. Previously, I taught General Education Kindergarten for 6 years.

I am a kind hearted yet firm teacher. The students with behavior issues are often sent to me. If you need someone to push your child to the next level, find a method of teaching that works for your child, or continue teaching them so they can gain extra knowledge, I'd like to talk with you.

I'm certified to teach Reading in both K-5 and 4-8 grades. I have taught reading to students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, in both a General Education setting, and a Special Education setting.

I am required to teach Common Core standards in my classroom. I am well versed in the standards.

I hold a certification in Kindergarten through 8th grade in all subject areas, and Special Education.

I have taught Special Education for 4 years. I have had students with a variety of needs and disabilities. Some students had behavioral challenges that needed to be addressed in order for them to learn, others had learning disabilities and needed the subject matter taught in a different way.

I am available to tutor and day or evening during the summer months, and most evenings during the school year. I am flexible with the tutoring location as well. If you feel you, or your student, need someone who is energetic and able to teach in a variety of ways, contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I teach using common core standards on a daily basis. My lesson plans must include the standards I am teaching for each grade level each day. For example: When I am teaching Kindergarten students Reading I list the reading standards we are focusing on for the week. There are a number of standards we cover throughout the year, but most of the science and social studies are covered in a few weeks, and then we move onto a new standard.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught General Education Kindergarten for 6 years. I now teach Special Education in an elementary school. My teaching certificates are valid for K-8 grades in all subject areas.

Phonics

I love teaching phonics and phonemic awareness to students. I have used a wide variety of programs and techniques, based off the students needs. With my special needs students I often begin with the program they use in the general education class, and add what is needed. Florida Reading Research is a great tool, as is the WonderWorks program we use at my school currently. I have used DIBELS to progress monitor and diagnose needs. I have used computer programs, flashcards, games, books, white boards, etc.

Special Needs

I have taught Special Education for the past four years. My first year was in an EBD classroom, the past three have been in a Resource Room, or Co-Teaching in a General Education setting. My students have required a variety of teaching methods and techniques, depending on their needs. I have taught students with behavioral needs, learning disabilities in reading and math, ADHD, seizure disorders, Stickler;s Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and Developmentally Delayed.
