The mastery of language and the ability to write it or say it is key, in my view, to success in any chosen field. As a young student, my teachers frequently reminded me that "if you can spell, speak, and write correctly and effectively, you will excel."
I believe that now more than ever, and I know I can help my students with any challenge, from essays to speeches. I have been an English teacher in middle school, and a Spanish teacher in high school, and have always enjoyed the look in my students' eyes when they "get it!"
I enjoyed learning and speaking Spanish at home (my mother was a Spanish language major in college, and my sister was a self-taught Spanish/English interpreter at her college). I accepted a Spanish-teaching position that became available at the academy with which I was already Music Dept Head, and I am familiar with the differences in the Castilian, Cuban, and Mexican dialects.
I excelled in English as a student, and really love the study of American literature and proper grammar. I became the middle school English teacher at Franklin Heights Christian Academy, as well as their Drama and Music teacher, so public speaking, theater, and presentation from stage is quite familiar. In addition, I was a professional singer on the road over 15 years, which helped me learn stage presence and confidence. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Drama coach in school, I was able to train students from 5 to 18 years old in projecting, speaking clearly, even animating their voices as necessary. Our productions and performances were well received, and my students spoke often of their great experiences overcoming fears and anxieties. I have been emcee on a number of school programs; in addition, I have hosted TV variety shows, given keynote speeches at conferences, and have given on-air radio interviews.
