About John

Writing is power. Proper use of words enforces who you are. I have written for The Ledger-Enquirer as an education writer and as a political writer. While in the U. S. Army, I was chief writer for a publication designed for foreign officers in training at Ft. Benning. As I served a local church in Fayetteville, Georgia, I wrote a weekly column of various subjects for 15 years.

Scholarly, I wrote my dissertation defending a project that identified the needs, life circumstances, and resources for single parents in south Florida. Newspaper writing is somewhat different from academic composition. In academic writing, one defines the purpose of the paper and fulfills that intended purpose while newspaper writing still clings to answering who, what, when, where, how and sometimes why.

I learned grammar during my senior year in high school. Before graduation, each student had to correct 100 complex sentences. This was called "perfect copy" and strictly enforced. Reading always enlarges vocabulary which enhances one's ability to express thoughts more powerfully and accurately. I have spoken publicly since days of high school when I won first or second places in state and national oratorical contests.

I know how to write a good sentence. I want to help students who want to excel in this area so they can be more effective in any endeavor of their choice. Please contact me. I am a friendly, forgiving, and fun person who knows how to write a sentence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have been writing speeches for competition and career since the 9th grade when I placed first in the Optimist Oratorical Contest. I also placed first in Columbus, Georgia's Better Speaker's Tournament, first place in the Georgia Sons of the American speech contest, as well as being voted to give the high school commencement address by 656 fellow seniors. Additionally, I gave the Martin Luther King, Jr. annual address in Fayette County, Georgia. I have been tutored by a governor of Georgia, a professor at seminary, and debate coaches at high school and the university.
